Big Oxford University Debate: “Does Islam explain reality better than Atheism?”

The debate was hosted by Oxford University on 6th May 2019. The topic debated was “Does Islam explain reality better than Atheism?” and the arguments made were powerful, passionate and intense. Al-hamdulillah, the truth of Islam was demonstrated to be not only the best explanation of reality but the only explanation of reality that makes sense with what we can observe. On the other side, the Atheist’s denial of God meant that they couldn’t provide an ultimate explanation of reality without falling into self-contradictions.

The speakers were Mohammed Hijab (S.A.L.A.M Initiative), Abdullah al Andalusi (Muslim Debate Initiative) debating against Atheist speakers, Alex O’Connor, an international speaker and popular YouTuber “Cosmic Skeptic”, and writer for the New Humanist Journal, and Psychiatrist, Dr Colin Brewer.

  1. You misunderstand. Atheism isn’t a belief system. It doesn’t try to explain anything. It is simply the absence of belief in the existence of a god or gods.

    • No matter how many times this is pointed out to them, the religious never seem to get this do they?
One has to wonder if a large measure of willful ignorance is at play here, or is it simply indoctrination?

      • If there was no God how come I can have a dream where the first part comes true very soon and the second part comes true after three years? Just wondering.

      • I am sure the worshipers of Hanuman and Shiva feel the same way, and I wonder how you feel about their gods?
In fact, I know Christians feel the same way about Jesus but you don’t think he is divine, now do you?
So where does this leave us?
Well, there is the chance that one of you is right but the more ,likely option is that you are all wrong, and unless you can provide evidence to verify your particular god claim then I’m afraid all you have is a claim, and to be honest, it is at this stage as useless as every other.
