Islamophobia definition raises more questions than answers

Surat Al-Hujurat, the 49th chapter of the Koran, states: “O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.”

The authors of the recent all-party parliamentary group on British Muslims report on Islamophobia would do well to heed that advice.

The government rejected calls to adopt the term “Islamophobia” and its subsequent definition “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness”.

Co-ordinated attempts to smear any criticism of the report as “bad faith” are weak and cynical.
