TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Austrian Parliament member Martha Bissmann has worn a headscarf during her address against a controversial bill that prohibits primary school girls across the country from wearing hijab.

Bissmann, an independent MP, covered her hair during a general assembly speech on Friday to protest the measure, saying, “Let’s not allow a wedge to be driven between us.”
The ban was approved after lawmakers from Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s ruling conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) and the anti-migration Freedom Party (FPÖ) — who have formed a majority government together — voted in its favor. Under the new legislation, it would be illegal for Muslim girls under the age of 10 to wear hijab at all primary schools, including private schools, Press TV reported.
Almost all opposition lawmakers voted against the measure condemning it as “discriminatory.”
Bissmann accused the FPÖ of promoting “racism and Islamophobia” in the country over the last decade. She said that those who introduced the ban wanted to eliminate “high values such as tolerance and freedom of religion.”
“This is the first step to ban headscarves in everyday life,” she added.
Austria’s official Muslim community organization (IGGOe) also condemned the move as “shameless” and a “diversionary tactic.”
A large number of non-governmental organizations, journalists and activists also expressed their opposition to the ban.
The country is home to around 700,000 Muslims.
German linguist,Emel Erdem commended Bissmann for her “courageous” move.
“What a courageous gesture, what a courageous statement! They strengthen my belief in a peaceful coexistence – many thanks for that, all the best for their future and warm greetings from Germany!” she wrote in a Twitter message.
Austria’s right-wing parties have proposed several controversial measures against the Muslim community, including strict controls on mosques and Muslim associations as well as an immediate closing of mosques in cases of “suspicious activity.”
Austria’s previous government had also prohibited full-face veils in courts, schools and other public places. It has banned judges, police officers, magistrates and public prosecutors from wearing hijab.
Similar restrictions, commonly referred to as the “Burqa Ban,” have also been adopted in some other European Union countries like, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

What do you expect from the so called civilised Austrians? They must learn to respect and tolerate those who are different. Multiculturalism is not about integration but about cultural plurality. It is not about separation but about respect and the deepening awareness of Unity in Diversity. Looking at the case of France, a major secular nation, I believe it is also not allowing women freedom by not letting her to wear her choice of clothing as it supposedly “clashes with French secular values”
Muslim community needs Masajid, state funded Muslim schools, Halal meat, sharia laws, time off for Friday afternoon prayers, two official religious holidays per year and Muslim cemeteries. Native Brits must learn to respect and tolerate those who are different. Don’t these hypocrites idiots know what their ancestors did to Native American Indians they slaughtered 150 millions of Native American Indians! and also do they know that Great Britain invaded 80% countries around the world? n can assume the role of accommodation and concern for all peoples, for our planet and indeed for our survival. Multi-culturalism is even more important and crucial after 9/11 and 7/7. Muslim youths are also likely to feel alienated by a focus on shared Brutishness, rather than multicultural diversity. Rather than promoting a single British “us” teaching should acknowledge that “us” can be diverse and plural. Children should be encouraged to explore differences in appearance, history and religion to reduce social and educational fears.

Iftikhara – We have covered this issue before, in fact more than once. Whilst I agree with you that Europeans have done some terrible things around the world throughout history, the situation has changed in more recent years, in that Muslims in large numbers are now settling in Europe. And yes, we know the reasons why immigration and refugees have increased over recent years. The numbers may yet be relatively small, but it is obvious that there is rapid expansion, and bearing in mind that there are certain factions who want to Islamicise Europe, it can hardly be a surprise that the natives are not keen to encourage or tolerate cultural change. The few Sikhs, Jews and others don’t present problems or threats. It’s all about numbers. And it is, after all, a one-sided affair, since Europeans/non-Muslims are not welcome en mass in Muslims countries, and the few who do visit have to conform to their standards and values.
I live some of my time in Lombok, Indonesia, a (supposed to be) conservative Muslim island. Many Europeans are retiring there or setting up businesses there. It is a good place for tourist projects as Lombok is what Bali was some 30 years ago. Well, I do not see that the Europeans (and Americans, Australians) are conforming a lot to local standards. Alcohol is available in all their ‘haunts’ etc. The locals seems quite tolerant of this kind of invasion. – And, as ‘Expatriate’ in 15 countries I was always welcome in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. I have no complaints.
The certain factions who want to Islamicise Europe seem to me to be in minute minority. The vast majority of immigrants just want to take part in the economic progress. Yes, the parallel society is a problem / challenge. It did strike me when attending the funeral of my Pakistani origin brother-in-law in London that there was not a single white person around. May be we should discuss this issue more deeply (parallel societies).
An immigrant is an immigrant. He is neither illegal or legal. When does an ‘immigrant’ become a ‘native’?? All of us were immigrants at one time in the recent or distant past. Most of them say that they have experienced race discrimination and religious prejudice. Muslims and Islam is promoted a fundamentalist and separatist by the western elite, which have negative impact on community and social cohesion. The number of racist incidents occurring in London Borough of Redbridge’s schools have reached their highest levels since record begin.
To all of you idiotic, racist bigots. We are a nation of immigrants. There has always been immigration and our country would not have prospered at any point in its history without immigration. Read a book you morons. If every single immigrant left this country either foreign that was born here or immigrants who have moved here to study or work. God has created diverse human beings to live in this tiny global village of one family. Creation by its very nature is diverse with different species, different communities, different cultures and languages. These differences represent the beauty and wonder but diversity is sometimes not fully appreciated, resulting in all sorts of clashes. The British society and Establishment must learn to respect and accommodate others, as if in a family.
Western colonial powers made a mess in Africa, the sub-continent and in the Middle East couple decades ago. The least they can do is to accept people from the countries they have robbed and ruined. The western countries which colonised the world Yes it is a duty to give them back some pieces of what they have stolen !

Up until the battle of Plessey when the east India company took over Bengal, Bengal had been a major textile producer, exporting their sought after muslins and other textiles all over the world. Bengal was known as a paradise because of the riches this earned. Within 50 years the company had halved the productivity through enforced unfair pricing and taxes. Eventually the industrial revolution came to Britain and the new textile factories required a captive market. The muslin weaver’s thumbs were cut off thus killing of what was left of Bengali textiles. So the raw materials were taken from the colonies, processed only in Britain and then sold back to the colonised. That is the reality not that it’s taught in schools. In its most perverted form it was actually going to war with China to force them to allow selling opium in exchange for tea. Yeah – colonialism was a great thing…
Europe is dying its natural death. It needs more and more immigrants to keep their societies alive. Without migration, European societies and economies would bleed to death.
UK economy grew at fastest pace because of never ending immigration. Without constant flow of immigrants British society and economy would bleed to death. In today’s world we can no longer afford to live in a vacuum and ignore what is going on in the rest of the world. Trade, travel, and telecommunications have made the nations of the modern world more interdependent than ever before and today more than ever before – we need to desperately seek solutions to climate change, water scarcity, pollution, over population, and Third World poverty.

Iftikhara – I cannot argue with you on most of the points you raise, but if you were on the other side of the fence you would no doubt have different opinions, as I do. So do try to understand why the various problems exist, not just from your perspective. And calling people idiots and racist bigots is hardly helpful.
