VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis began purging Chile’s Catholic hierarchy on Monday over an avalanche of sex abuse and cover-up cases, starting with accepting the resignations of the bishop at the center of the scandal and two others.

More heads were expected to roll, given that the scandal has only grown in the weeks since all of Chile’s 30-plus active bishops offered to quit over their collective guilt in failing to protect Chile’s children from priests who raped, groped and molested them.

A Vatican statement said Francis had accepted the resignations of Bishop Juan Barros of Osorno, Bishop Gonzalo Duarte of Valparaiso and Bishop Cristian Caro of Puerto Montt. He named a temporary leader for each diocese.

Barros, 61, has been at the center of Chile’s growing scandal ever since Francis appointed him bishop of Osorno in 2015 over the objections of the local faithful, his own sex abuse prevention advisers and some of Chile’s other bishops.

  1. When will the Catholic Church open the debate whether the idea of ‘celibacy’ is in fact responsible, or at least partly responsible’ for all that abuse mess that they are in?

  2. When will the Moslems open a debate about how the Quran and Sharia (Which I studied thoroughly) are nothing but satanic verses? Remember – I detest the church and religion, but I hate it when people like you criticize Christians and Jews and when Christian and Jews criticize Moslems – You are all evil and a dis
    grace to the human race.

    • interesting view … towards a group of people whose motto is ‘Love for All and Hatred for None’.

      • Rafiq my friend, are you joking? Moslems’ motto is love for all and hatred for none? I read this and I could not stop laughing. Most moslems know nothing but hate and bigotry and I am not sure where you came up with this thought. You are a funny man, my friend, unless you meant your sentence in reverse “Hatred for all and love for none.”

      • The Motto ‘Love for All and hatred for None’ is the Motto of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Please study it further by watching http://www.mta.tv (there is an Arabic channel also). Also check out http://www.alislam.org. It’s library has a lot of books and articles from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s point of view. And then you will see it is serious!

  3. My dear friend, I am an Egyptian lawyer. I know Islam very well. You are a kind man for sure, I have no doubt about that. Your religion, however, and your Quran are far from being kind – In fact, they should be outlawed for the protection of the innocent people. Do not forget that Islam was spread by force using the edge of the sword. Do not forget that Islam is a regressive religion – Study all the moslem country and you will see how ignorant, regressive, violent, and inhuman they are. That is not a coincidence my friend. You, I admire. My family is Copt and I think their belief is as evil as all religions; however, they are as kind as you are. My total respect for you my friend.

  4. Thank you for your reference to my comments – Somi, with all due respect to Rafiq and his attempt to salvage what is not salvageable, he is trying to convince those non-Aran-speaking “Scholars” that Islam is a religion of love. There is no religion on the planet that is of love: “Religion is the masterpiece of animal training for it trains people as to how they shall think.” Moslems have proven this quote over, and over, and over since the year 622.

Please do not be offended by Rafiq; he believes he is doing a good thing.
