What Does the Quran Mean: O Mankind We Created You From a Male and a Female?

This picture is a symbolism for Adam and Eve based on the Bible. The Muslim Times has the best collection of articles about the Quran, evolution and religion and science

Written and collected by Zia H Shah MD, Chief Editor of the Muslim Times

For more than 1400 years, since the revelation of the Quran, all the Muslims have interpreted the verse, ‘O mankind! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female,’  to mean that God created the whole of the human family through Adam and Eve.  But, this cannot be true if the theory of evolution is true and I believe many aspects of the theory especially the common ancestry of all life forms on the planet earth, is absolutely true and as true as the physics of Albert Einstein and of all the physicist of the 20th century.  The veracity of the physicist has been established a million times and more by all the technological developments of the last few decades and almost every one of us carries them in the form of smart phones in our pockets these days.

The full Quranic verse that I am talking about is:

O mankind! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another. Indeed, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is all-knowing, all-aware. (Al Quran 49:13/14)

I have tried to review all the popular commentaries of 20th and the 21st century in English and Urdu and none of them interpret this verse in the modern biological light.  By the Grace of Allah in this age of information I know enough about the Quran and biology and evolution that I have better understood the meaning of this verse.

No where in the Quran the name of grandmother Eve is mentioned. The fact of the matter is that the only lady mentioned by name in the Quran is mother Mary. If the Quran had claimed that God has created the mankind from Adam and Eve, who existed some 6000 years ago, it would have shown that the writer of the Quran is not Omniscient, but it was not to be. Praise be to Allah!

Nevertheless, almost all the Muslims have misinterpreted the detail of this verse until now. A subtle reminder that we need to constantly reinterpret the Quran in the context of the time and modern light and not try to box the message from the Infinite and Omniscient into our finite thoughts and knowledge or the time limited interpretations of the past scholars.

Now, I will show the readers from biology why we are not all children of Adam and Eve and what would this Quranic phrase mean more precisely.

If humans, biological name Homo sapiens, were gradually evolving from other apes, over thousands or millions of years, then Adam and Eve are not the common ancestor of all human beings.

If you are skeptical of biological evolution then watch this 11 minute video for a knock out proof from molecular biology about our common ancestry:

If I have, by the Grace of Allah, understood some parts of the Quran better than most, it is because I have learnt not only from the Muslims but the Christians and the Jews and even the atheists. This particular insight came my way from reading the well known atheist Prof. Richard Dawkins.

CHIMPANZEE

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) infant age 7 months, peeking out of grooming group, tropical forest, Western Uganda

In his book The Ancestor’s Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution, he traces the ancestry of humans to the very first living form on the planet earth in 39 meeting points with different species. He calls these meeting points Rendezvous. The first Rendezvous is with the chimpanzees and bonobos, the second Rendezvous is with gorillas, the third with Orangutans, the fourth with gibbons, the fifth with old world monkeys, the sixth with the new world monkeys, the tenth with mice and rabbits, the fifteenth with mammal like reptiles and the last or the 39th with eubacteria. You got the idea!

The male and female that the Quran describes is perhaps the the shared parent between humans, chimpanzees and the bonobos.

bonobo.jpg

Bonobos

Now, I share with you the opening of the chapter where Dawkins describes the Rendezvous 1:

Between 5 and 7 million years ago, somewhere  in Africa, we human pilgrims enjoy a momentous encounter. It is Rendezvous 1, our first meeting with pilgrims from another species. Two other species to be precise, for the common chimpanzee pilgrims and the pygmy chimpanzee or bonobo pilgrims have already joined forces with each other some 4 million years ‘before’ their rendezvous with us. The common ancestor we share with them, Concestor 1, is our 250,000-greats-grandparent – an approximate guess this, of course, like the comparable estimates that I shall be making for other concestors.

As we approach Rendezvous 1, then, the chimpanzee pilgrims are approaching the same point from another direction. Unfortunately we don’t know anything about that other direction. Although Africa has yielded up some thousands of hominid fossils or fragments of fossils, not a single fossil has ever been found which can definitely be regarded as along the chimpanzee line of descent from Concestor 1. This may be be- cause they are forest animals, and the leaf litter of forest floors is not friendly to fossils. Whatever the reason, it means that the chimpanzee pilgrims are searching blind. Their equivalent contemporaries of the Turkana Boy, of 1470, of Mrs Ples, Lucy, Little Foot, Dear Boy, and the rest of ‘our’ fossils — have never been found.

Nevertheless, in our fantasy the chimpanzee pilgrims meet us in some Pliocene forest clearing, and their dark brown eyes, like our less predict- able ones, are fixed upon Concestor 1: their ancestor as well as ours. In trying to imagine the shared ancestor, an obvious question to ask is, is it more like modern chimpanzees or modern humans, is it intermediate, or completely different from either?

Notwithstanding the pleasing speculation that ended the previous section — which I would by no means rule out — the prudent answer is that Concestor 1 was more like a chimpanzee, if only because chimpanzees are more like the rest of the apes than humans are. Humans are the odd ones out among apes, both living and fossil. Which is only to say that more evolutionary change has occurred along the human line of descent from the common ancestor, than along the lines leading to the chimpanzees. We must not assume, as many laymen do, that our ancestors were chimpanzees. Indeed, the very phrase ‘missing link’ is suggestive of this misunderstanding. You still hear people saying things like, ‘Well, if we are descended from chimpanzees, why are there still chimpanzees around?

So, when we and the chimpanzee/bonobo pilgrims meet at the rendezvous point, the likelihood is that the shared ancestor that we greet in that Pliocene clearing was hairy like a chimpanzee, and had a chimpanzee-sized brain. Reluctantly to set aside the speculations of the previous chapter, it probably walked on its hands (knuckles) like a chimp, as well as its feet. It probably spent some time up trees, but also lots of time on the ground, maybe squat feeding as Jonathan Kingdon would say. All available evidence suggests that it lived in Africa, and only in Africa. It probably used and made tools, following local traditions as modern chimpanzees still do. It probably was omnivorous, sometimes hunting, but with a preference for fruit.

Perhaps this ‘shared ancestor,’ at Rendezvous 1 is the male and female that the Quran is referring to and not the prophet Adam or his wife Eve, who lived some 6000 years ago and who are the great great grand parents of many of us but not all.

The other possibility in this Quranic verse could be the very first life form when multiplication changed from the asexual to sexual reproduction in the unicellular organisms.

Incidentally, the verse also lays the foundation of our universal brotherhood and sisterhood and Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

If you still have hard time conceptualizing this idea then read the whole of the book, by Prof. Richard Dawkins’, The Ancestor’s Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution.

  1. The verse 39:13 down not say “single male and female,” it states “created you from male and female”

      • Please see grammar and literal translations from 4 sources. I believe that most translators are influenced by the Biblically transmitted story of human creation. If human species came from Adam and Eve, the human species would be extinct long time ago due the natural phenomenon called genetic bottleneck.

Arberry: O mankind, We have created you male and female, and appointed you races and tribes, that you may know one another. Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most godfearing of you. God is All-knowing, All-aware

  2. As I understand it, Adam and Eve are symbolic characters, rather than factual, seen as the starting point of humanity in the Abrahamic context.

And humans are not descended from chimpanzees or any other apes, rather we are all descended from a common source and evolved separately. There is much information available about this.

  3. And does anyone know why the Abrahamic God is always considered to be an old man, a patriarch? Nobody knows what God looks like, and should not be considered a sexual being. A figment of male imagination and wishful thinking, male dominance and power. Why not a Mother God?

    • always? not among Muslims surely. ” And No One is Like Him ” (ok, the him is just a ‘language challenge’)

  4. HOW DID GOD CREATE MANKIND? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE/ DUTY ?
FIRST GENERATION GOD CREATED WITH SOIL
God said in Taurat and Al Quran.
The first man and woman; Adam dan Hawa.
God took same soil from the ground and formed a man out of it. God breathed life giving breath into his nostril and the man began to live. Genesis 2:7.

It is not good for the man to live alone,God will make wife. Then God made the man fall into deep sleep and while he was sleeping,God took out one of the man’s Rib and closed up the the flesh.–brought her to him.–named is Eve.Genesis 2:21. Look at Taurat.Genesis.3:1

    NATURAL CHARECTER OF HUMAN BEING!
I will make you and the woman hate each other;her offspring and your trouble in pregenancy and your pain in giving birth. In spiet this you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him. Genesis 3:16

SECOND GENERATION GOD CREATE WITH SPERM
From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; Then doth He make his path smooth for him; Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his Grave; Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again)..(QS.80:19-21)

Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay); Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed; Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then We made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then We developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the Best to create! After that, at length ye will die. Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up. (QS.23:12-16)
Him Who created thee, fashioned thee in due proportion, and gave thee a just bias; In whatever form He wills, does He put thee together. (QS. 82:7)

And that Allah created the pairs, male and female, from Nutfah or drops of semen when it is emitted (QS.53:45-46).

O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into races and tribes, so that you may identify one another. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. QS 49;13.

He Who has made everything which He has created Most Good: He began the creation of man with (nothing more than) clay,
[8] And made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised:
[9] But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding): little thanks do ye give! QS 32:7-9

Bukhari 4:54:506 “- THE PROPHET SAID, ‘WHEN ANY HUMAN BEING IS BORN, SATAN TOUCHES HIM AT BOTH SIDES WITH HIS TWO FINGERS, EXCEPT JESUS, SON OF MARY, WHOM SATAN TRIED TO TOUCH BUT FAILED– ‘”. Jesus was a Holy. Jesus was a spiritual of God, 100 percent Holy. Only Allah and Jesus could give a life for human and bird. Allah us Holy, Jesus was Holy too.
Jesus is a life for ever, now Jesus is in Heaven with Allah

BUT HUMAN BEING WILL DIE SOON

He will say: “Ye stayed not but a little, if ye had only known!QS 23:114

God said; “You will have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything, until you go back to the soil from which you were formed. You were made from the soil, and you will become soil again” (Genesis 3.18-19.)

  5. Interesting stories, Somi, but you can see that most originate from the Old Testament of the Bible (Genesis), and a great influence on the Quran.

  6. Renate—we have to see God books like this!

Taurat was the old tastement, after 3000 years God sent the New Tastement Godpel to update the old laws, , and then God sent Al Quran the last His book.

    Remember!
God sent down Godpel to Jesus it daes not mean the Old tastement Taurat became Invalid laws, as well God sent down Al Quran it does not mean the Previous book, Taurat, Zabur, Godpel became invalid.

God command the followers of Prophet Muhammad to follow the all God’s laws that NOT against Al Quran as the final laws of Islam.

May God guide Muslim around the world to the truth. Amin

  7. The verses of the Quran are “mubayyinat”, i.e which make things plain, clear, distinct and perspicuous.

“We have already sent down to you verses making things clear (ayatinmubayyinatin) , an illustration from (the story of) people who passed away before you, and an admonition for those who fear (Allah).” [Quran 24:34]

    Allah makes the verses of the Quran plain and clear within the Quran;

“Allah wills to explain things for you, and to guide you through past precedents, and to redeem you. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.” [Quran 4:26]

A key principle that must be established when to correctly interpret the Qur’an and ahadith we must approach them as one coherent and homogeneous unit that affords a holistic interpretation, and not an interpretation based on preconceived ideas that singles out isolated verses so as to misconstrue them.

Our first ancestor was the prophet Adam (upon whom be peace), who was created by Allah in janna, or “paradise” and not on earth, but also created in a particular way that He describes to us:

“And [mention] when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Truly, I will create a man from clay. So when I have completed him, and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down prostrate to him.’ And the angels prostrated, one and all. Save for Satan, who was too proud to, and disbelieved. He said to him, ‘O Satan, what prevented you from prostrating to what I have created with My two hands? Are you arrogant, or too exalted?’ He said: ‘I am better than he; You created me from fire and created him from clay'” (Qur’an 38:71-76).

The first man is honoured: (“My spirit”) is what is called in Arabic idafat al-tashrif “an attribution of honour,” showing that the ruh or “spirit” within this first human being and his descendants was “a sacred, exalted, and noble substance”
“It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her in love.” (Quran 7:189).

From these two individuals, generations of human beings have inhabited the earth. “Oh humankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know each other. Indeed the most honoured among you in the sight of Allah is the one who is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted.” (Quran 49:13)
And “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers. But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, “Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.” And he swore [by Allah] to them, “Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors.” So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?” They said, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”[Allah] said, “Descend, being to one another as enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time.” [Quran 7:19 -24]

The above verses clearly states that Allah created Adam from clay in Paradise. Then Adam and eve were sent to earth. Thus there is no human evolution from animals. The verse also proves that Adam was created before being sent to earth which again proves creationism and refutes Darwinism.

“Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.” [Quran 32:7, 8]

The above verses clearly state that Adam was created from clay and that he was not born nor Adam was from a biological mating nor evolved from previous creatures. The above verse also indicates that only Adam’s progeny were created from liquid disdained and not Adam himself, hence again proving that Adam had no parents. The Quran clearly refutes Darwinism. The verses regarding Adam’s creation must be taken as literal since the Quran is in clear Arabic and is the eloquent book of guidance.

    Another ayah which supports the traditional Muslim belief;
“The likeness of Jesus, to Allah, is the same as Adam. He created him from earth and then He said to him, ‘Be!’ and he was.”[Quran 3:59]
A brief look into the sabab al-nuzul (causes for revelation) quickly makes clear that the verse was revealed to repudiate the Christian argument that proof of Jesus’ divinity is his having no earthly father. The verse states that Adam had no parents whatsoever, being created instead from earth, yet this did not make him divine; the comparison then was between the single parent of Jesus and the absence of parents in regards to Adam.

  8. Almighty Allah Proclaims:

“Allah made all things He created excellent; and He began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his offspring from the extract of base fluid; then He fashioned and breathed into him of His Spirit; and gave you hearing and sight and the faculty of inferring. And yet how little are the thanks you offer!” (Al-Quran, 32:7-9)

The above verses clearly prove that Adam was created from clay and he was not born to any parents or biological species therefor negating human evolution from animals. In fact all the early Muslims understood the verses about Adam’s creation as apparent and literal; they all affirmed that Adam was the first human created.

The story of the Sabbath-breakers is well known whereby Allah cursed the disobedient and turned them into monkeys and pigs. [Quran 5:60]

How then, can the honoured sons of Adam actually come from that which is considered a curse? Of course, in being honoured, it is only logical to conclude that either humanity haven’t come from apes or that we negate the verse itself and claim that the Sabbath-breakers did not turn into apes and pigs. Even if we were to state, for the sake of argument, that the transformation was metaphorical, the essential point still remains that they were cursed by taking on qualities of monkeys and apes.

Correspondingly, there are various contradictions that arise in relation to Adam and Hawwa’ when attempting to scripturally justify human evolution. There are various mutawatir texts that confirm that Adam and Hawwa’ lived as spouses and that mankind came from the two, indeed the textual evidences regarding this point are particularly decisive.

The Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: ‘I will be leading the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection. I will be the first to rise from the grave. I will be the first to intercede and the first whose request will be granted’. He (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) also said: ‘I will be the leader of all mankind on the Day of Judgment’.

The Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) stated that he is the leader of all of the Children of Adam (‘alayhis salām) and thus the hadith proves that Adam is the first human because Prophet Muhammad (saw) is the leader of humanity.

We find that Anas ibn Malik relates from the Prophet,
“When Allah fashioned Adam in Paradise, He left him as He willed. Iblis then wandered around him examining him. Upon seeing him as hollow from within, he recognised that Adam had been created with a disposition that he would not have control over himself. [Sahih Muslim]

From this hadith it is clearly evident that Adam was an empty form before life was given to him and was left in that state for a period of time. These points clearly refute Darwinism and clearly lay the creation of Adam in the hands of Allah alone in a completely direct manner. There is a clear denial of Adam being the descendent of any other being or species in the unequivocal establishment of Allah shaping Adam Himself.

Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet (saw) said: “Allah created Adam upon His form, his height being sixty cubits …” [Bukhari and Muslim]. Ibn Hajr commenting on this hadith reminds us and makes it very clear that the Muslims believe that Adam did not go through the normal stages of human life as his children do: birth, infancy, youth and then adulthood as evolution suggests. He states: ‘rather Allah created him a complete and well-proportioned man from the moment the soul was blown in to him …’ (Fath al-Bari 6/366). Again, this hadith clearly contradicts the theory of evolution which requires the stages of life from birth to death to be applied throughout the differing species and their descendants.
Allah has explained the stages involved in Adam’s creation.

If we believe that Allah is the Creator and can create anything He wills then what is wrong in accepting that he created Adam directly from clay, fashioned him, and brought him to life instantaneously? What is it that they negate? Why do we need to distort the meanings of countless Quranic verses in favour of a theory that continually changes? Must we negate the numerous and authentic hadith that clearly establish a non-evolutionist narrative? Let’s not forget that Quran is the clear book of guidance and not a book of secret codes.

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. [Quran 18:1]

    • I have given plenty of verses to prove that the Quran gives us the truth regarding adam’s creation in heaven without any parents, which refutes darwinism and hence supports the traditional muslim belief of human origin.

rather than going off topic, it would be great to see your response to all those verse.

    • We have common sense. If any statement is in contradiction with the Qur’an we can ignore it. And the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at are so fortunate: We have our scholars to guide us and in case of further doubts we have our beloved Khalifa – guided by Allah – to guide us …

  11. Unfortunately only less 1 percent Muslim follow ahmadiyyah. It is cool.
But Ahmadiyyah cannot prevent the other Muslim to follow the false Hadith. Because the false Hadith exist in the book of Hadith Sahih Muslim.

So as long as the false Hadith still exist or written in the book of Hadith, killing innocent people will continue and persecution of Ahmadiyaah, LGBT, infidel will continue forever.

Except if the false Hadith are removed from the book of Hadith. The book of Hadith have to be rewritten.
There is no option to prevent the killing innocent people in the name of Islam.
