India: Amritsar physician kidnapped after wife pays ransom

A doctor kidnapped on Thursday night by gangster Gopi Ghanshaypuria and his accomplices near Ajnala in Amritsar was released after his wife paid a ransom of Rs 7.5 lakh to the kidnappers.The gangster is reportedly linked to Vicky Goundar.

The gangsters, who had demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore, collected Rs 7.5 lakh, the amount available at the doctor’s place.

Dr Manish Sharma, who runs a hospital at Ajnala, was waylaid near Rajasansi by some people who were following him in a car.

One of them identified himself as Gopi Ghanshyampuria and kidnapped him at gunpoint and asked for a ransom of Rs 2 crore.When he expressed his inability to pay the amount, they made him call his wife and one of the accomplices went and collected Rs 7.5 lakh from his house at Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar.

They later released him.The man who collected the money was identified as Supreet Harry by the doctor’s wife. The incident happened between 8 pm and 11 pm. A case is being registered by the Amritsar Rural police.Amritsar Rural SSP J Elanchezian said they came to know of the incident around 2 am. He confirmed the paying of the ransom.The SSP said the doctor was kidnapped by Gopi Ghanshampuria and his accomplices. He said the police teams were working on some leads.Meanwhile, Dr Sharma has reached home safely.
