There are references to sex slavery in the Quran – but when you read them in context, the meaning is very different to what right-wing fundamentalists – and Islamists – would have you believe

Like many myths about Islam, the Quran and Muslims, I’ve always heard the worst from Islamophobic extremists and Islamist extremists alike. They tend to share pretty much the same language, online content and perpetuate the same awful narratives about Muslims and their supposed religious practices.

As time wears on I’m starting to see these similarities are unavoidable – particularly online where it is rife. For example, this video of a female Muslim ‘scholar’ saying that men can have sex with female prisoners of war to ‘humiliate’ them has been shared widely on right-wing news sites and social media.

This narrative has been spread in the wake of recent sexual assault allegations in Cologne and reports of Isis fighters raping and selling sex slaves. It’s mainly been promoted by Donald Trump supporting anti-Muslim bigots, far-right extremists and people who’ll easily believe anything bad about Muslims.

Those sharing the video usually make unfounded claims that the ‘North African/Arab’ men accused of the Cologne assaults were motivated by a ‘Muslim background’. The video has been used as proof of a culturally ingrained mindset that all Muslims apparently possess, as well as claims that the Quran supposedly endorses raping women, in particular female slaves.

It’s worth noting the video has also been shared by Muslims who have strongly refuted and ostracised the scholar, reacting with disgust over this extreme view.

And they are right: rape and sexual violence is not permitted in Islamic texts. It is of course something that causes harm to other humans, which is not Halal (permissible) and, in early Muslim communities, rape was a crime punishable by death.

  1. FROM MY PERSPECTIVE ;
    Most of Muslim scholars are not Honest and do not want to admit that the ancient Islamic law allow Muslims men have sex with female prisoners of war without her wills.
    It is very clear that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) say in Al Quran;

    The Teaching about Slavery .
    God’s laws related to slavery can not be applied anymore in a modern time. These laws are invalid, out of date. such as follows below;

    1.And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts). (5) Except from their wives or (slaves) that their right hands possess, – for then, they are free from blame; QS 23;5-6

    2. O prophet, We have made lawful for you all your wives whom you have given their dowers, and those (bondwomen) whom you own, out of the captives Allah has given to you as spoils of war, and daughters of your paternal uncle, and daughters of your paternal aunts, and daughters of your maternal uncle, and daughters of your maternal aunts, who have migrated with you, and a believing woman who offers herself for (marrying) the prophet without dower, if the prophet wishes to bring her into his marriage, these rules being exclusive for you, and not for the (rest of the) believers, – We know what We have prescribed for them in respect of their wives and the slave-girls they own – so that there should be no difficulty for you. Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful. (50) You may postpone (the turn) of any one you wish from among them, and may accommodate with you any one you wish. And should you recall any one from those whom you kept aside, there is no blame on you. It is more likely, in this way, that their eyes will stay content, and they will not grieve, and all of them will be happy with whatever you give to them. 22 Allah knows whatever lies in your hearts, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (51) No women are lawful for you after this, nor is it lawful that you replace them (the present wives) with other wives, even though their goodness may attract you, 23 except the bond-women you own. And Allah is watchful of every thing. QS 33;50-52

    3. And those who guard their private parts, (their chastity )(29) Except from their wives and those (slave-girls) owned by their hands,__ because they are not to be blamed, (30) But the one who seeks (sexual gratification) beyond that, then such people are the transgressors,__ QS 70;29-30.

    4.Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess. thus hath Allah ordained (prohibitions) against you: except for these, all others are lawful, provided ye seek (them in marriage) with gifts from your property,― desiring chastity, not lust. Seeing that ye derive benefit from them give them their dowers (at least) as prescribed; but if, after a dower is prescribed, ye agree mutually (to vary it) there is no blame on you, and Allah is All-Knowing All-Wise. QS 4;23-24

    5.It is not for a believer (Muslim) to kill any believer, except by mistake. Whoever kills a believer by mistake, then, a believing slave has to be freed, and the blood money must be paid to his family, unless they forgo it. 43 If he (the victim) belongs to a people hostile to you and is a believer, then, a believing slave has to be freed. 44 If he (the victim) belongs to a people between whom and you there is treaty, then, blood money is to be paid to his family, 45 and a believing slave to be freed. Whoever does not find one has to fast for two consecutive months. This is repentance prescribed from Allah’s side. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. QS 4;92

    6.O you who believe, the slaves owned by you, and those of you who have not reached puberty, must seek your permission (to see you) at three times: before the prayer of Fajr, and when you take off your clothes at noon, and after the prayer of ‘Isha’. These are three times of privacy for you. There is no harm, neither to you nor to them, after these (three times). 14 They are your frequent visitors, as some of you are (frequent visitors) of the others. This is how Allah explains the verses to you. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. QS 24;58

    7. O you who believe, the slaves owned by you, and those of you who have not reached puberty, must seek your permission (to see you) at three times: before the prayer of Fajr, and when you take off your clothes at noon, and after the prayer of ‘Isha’. These are three times of privacy for you. It is very obvious that Islamic law allow men have many woman / man slaves. Men allow to marry many woman slave.

    This ancient Islamic laws have to be declared are invalid to implement at 21st Century.

    Extremist Muslim like ISIS,Taliban Jihadith still implement these ancient Islamic laws…as we see in Syria,Iraq,etc.

    It is odd, why does Muslim Ahmadiyah still uphold these ancient Islamic law? Whereas Muslim Ahmadiyah claim that they are reformer. In reality, they do not.

    There are so many the ancient Islamic law should be reformed, otherwise, Muslim can not show to people that Islam is beautiful religion, peaceful religion, Modern religion and mercy for all mankind.

  2. @ Zia H Shah—-Can You be honest as a good Muslim Ahmadiyah to respond my question above? Do you still support the law of slavery in 21st Century ?

  3. All the verses pertaining to concubines are not applicable in this day and age as non-Muslims are no longer enslaving the Muslims, unlike what was happening, just a few centuries ago in USA.

    Watch the television series the Roots.

  4. Islam provides guidance for all times and for all circumstances. Therefore not every instruction of the Holy Quran is applicable at all times. Instructions are applied according to the context and need.
    Example: Wudu is necessary only when one gets ready to pray, not all day.
    Instructions about the concubines or female prisoners of war were for a specific situation. Whenever those circumstances would exists the teaching will be applicable.
    Since in the modern times the situation has changed and no one is enslaving anybody, nor woman are coming into the possession of men. Therefore this teaching is not applicable in the present times.
    @Ali Hidaya: Not only your understanding of the religion is rudimentary and incorrect, you don’t even realize the lack of your knowledge. The unrefined language you use is one cause that others misunderstand the verses of the Holy Quran, when you quote them. Your translation of the verses of the Holy Quran is frequently incorrect. You add to the translation from your own ideas.
    Now for your information, the founder of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad has explained this subject. I have presented the summery of this explanation related to this matter.
    I hope you will do the right thing and apologize for your false accusation about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
