Livescience.com: Pope Francis recently expressed his approval of a group of exorcists meeting at the Vatican this week. While exorcisms, in which demonic spirits are driven out of a supposedly possessed person, may seem a dark practice relevant only on TV screens, they have long been recognized by the Catholic Church and several religions.
This week, more than 300 members of the International Association of Exorcists are attending the convention, which is focused on the impact of the occult and Satanismon people today, The Catholic Sun reported.

Priests who pursue the ministry of exorcism “manifest the Church’s love and acceptance of those who suffer because of the devil’s works,” Pope Francis wrote in a message to the association’s president, Father Francesco Bamonte, Breitbart reported this week. The Holy See’s approval of the International Association of Exorcists was “cause for joy not only for the association, but for the whole Church,” Bamonte said.
The belief that demons exist and can possess people features in many religions, including Christianity. Exorcisms date back to the time of Jesus, who according to the Bible, “cast out demons.”
Exorcism is “a highly unusual ministry for a situation in the human condition, which is quite rare, but it’s growing in frequency,” said Father Dwight Longenecker, a parish priest at Our Lady the Rosary in Greenville, South Carolina, who is not an exorcist, but supports the practice.
“Exorcism is a little bit like brain surgery in the spiritual realm,” Longenecker told Live Science. Real exorcisms aren’t quite as dramatic as Hollywood films such as “The Exorcist” would have you believe, but such movies do portray a version of events that actually happen, he said.

In Islam, exorcism is called ruqya. It is used to repair the damage caused by sihr or black magic. Exorcisms today are part of a wider body of contemporary Islamic alternative medicine called al-Tibb al-Nabawi (Medicine of the Prophet).[17]
Islamic exorcisms consist of the treated person lying down, while a sheikh places a hand on a patient’s head while reciting verses from the Quran.[17] The drinking of holy water (Zamzam Water from Zamzam Well ) may also take place.[18]
Specific verses from the Quran are recited, which glorify God (e.g. The Throne Verse (Arabic: آية الكرسي Ayatul Kursi)), and invoke God’s help. In some cases, the adhan/”ah-zan” (the call for daily prayers) is also read, as this has the effect of repelling non-angelic unseen beings or the jinn.
The Islamic prophet Muhammad taught his followers to read the last three suras from the Quran, Surat al-Ikhlas (The Fidelity), Surat al-Falaq (The Dawn) and Surat al-Nas (Mankind).

Josephus reports exorcisms performed by administering poisonous root extracts and others by making sacrifices.[19] The Dead Sea Scrolls mention that exorcisms were done by the Essene branch of Judaism.
In more recent times, Rabbi Yehuda Fetaya authored the book Minchat Yahuda, which deals extensively with exorcism, his experience with possessed people, and other subjects of Jewish thought. The book is written in Hebrew and was translated into English.
Rabbi Gershon Winkler of New Mexico explains that the procedure for a Jewish exorcism is intended not only to drive away the possessing force, but to help both the possessor and the possessed in an act of healing. The Jewish exorcism ritual is performed by a rabbi who has mastered practical Kabbalah. Also present is a minyan (a group of ten adult males), who gather in a circle around the possessed person. The group recites Psalm 91 three times, and then the rabbi blows a shofar (a ram’s horn).[20]
The shofar is blown in a certain way, with various notes and tones, in effect to “shatter the body” so that the possessing force will be shaken loose. After it has been shaken loose, the rabbi begins to communicate with it and ask it questions such as why it is possessing the body of the possessed. The minyan may pray for it and perform a ceremony for it in order to enable it to feel safe, and so that it can leave the person’s body.[20]
