One-a-Day Commandments of the Holy Quran – Approach not Prayer when you are not in full possession of your senses‏

112. Approach not Prayer when you are not in full possession of your senses

[4:44] O ye who believe! approach not Prayer when you are not in full possession of your senses, until you know what you say, nor when you are unclean, except when you are travelling along a way, until you have bathed. And if you are ill or you are on a journey while unclean, or if one of you comes from the privy or you have touched women and you find no water, then betake yourselves to pure dust and wipe therewith your faces and your hands. Surely, Allah is Most Indulgent, Most Forgiving.

  1. Rafiq,
I have said it constantly that no two copies of the quran say the same thing. Here are examples of this same verse from Zayid and Arberry.
Arberry sura 4:45 “O BELIEVERS, DRAW NOT TO PRAYER WHEN YOU ARE DRUNKEN–”
Zayid sura 4:41 “BELIEVERS, DO NOT APPROACH YOUR PRAYERS WHEN YOU ARE DRUNK–“.
These two versions refer to a state of drunkenness whereas yours avoid that word and talks about one not being in full possession of his/her senses. The impression you try to create is that of a people who abhor intoxicants. But the two verses I quoted do not say so. It enjoins those praying not to be drunk. But at other times they could be.

  2. The word used in original text is “Sukara”. Rafiq sahib is right. The original Arabic text of the Quran is the same in all copies of Quran. It is the translation that differs by different translators, similar to the case of Bible (Which has no original copy).

The meaning of verse is as follows:
Do not offer prayers (five daily prayers singly or in congregation) and you may be in a state of intoxication, until you know what you are saying..”

It is the second verse, revealed, in relation to drinking. The first verse, revealed, was stating that “People ask you about drinking and gambling.. Tell them that there are some advantages and some disadvantages in drinking. But its disadvantages are more than advantages…”.
After that was revealed the verse under discussion to not attend prayers while being in a bad state due to drinking.
The third verse revealed almost declared drinking as haram (even though it did not use the word Haraam in it). It forbade drinking, calling it the dirty work of the devil. So Muslims were told to shun drinking and stop it completely. That is the present practice of the Muslims and that is the last order about drinking.
It is a Mercy from Islam to all mankind that Islam has spoken openly against:
    1. Drinking, 2. Gambling, 3. Usury (interest).
Most or some of the ailments of present day people are due to the above three bad practices.

  3. @ Ghulam Sarwar,—
Let me explain the modren interpretation about;–Usury.(interest,Riba)
    .
May Allah guide me to explain the truth of Islam.
    .
The teaching about Usury or Riba.
Old interpretation; Often we heart that Muslim clerics forbid non-Islamic banks. The reason is non Islamic Bank provides interest or usury. Riba or usury is prohibited by GOD. Old interpretation of Islam is wrong. Western Bank is not usury or riba according to Allah’s law in Taurat.
    .
O ye who believe! Devour not usury, doubled and multiplied; but fear Allah; that ye may (really) prosper QS.3:130.
    .
And for practicing usury, which was forbidden, and for consuming the people’s money illicitly. We have prepared for the disbelievers among them painful retribution. [QS.4:161]
    .
(Interest granted by the borrower doubled, outrageous, this is usury as forbidden by GOD Almighty)
    .
    Modren interpretation;
    According to Allah’s law written in Taurat as follow;
    1. If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not be like a moneylender charge him no interest.Exodus 22:21

From the above verse we can conclude that lending to someone in need (such as the poor, the sick who can not afford to pay, to pay school fees or marriage etc) but not for trade, it is prohibited to provide interest. The statute is haram

If someone borrows money for commercial purposes, for profit, then allow give interest. it is not haram or prohibited. Because it will benefit both parties and beneficial to society.

    • Readers please note that ‘alatif’s comments’ are ‘alatif’s comments’ and not a Fatwa. Many of the things he says are correct, but some are, well, his own opinion (such as for instance that ‘today’s pig is cleaner than the one in ancient times’. Pork is pork and it is prohibited for a Muslim to eat it. FullStop (my opinion).

  4. @ Ghulam Sarwar,—
Let me explain the Modren interpretation about;–
    Halal food, Alcohol and pig.
    .

The teaching about Alcohol and pig (Halal Food )
Old interpretation; Often we hear that from extremist clerics that all foods are contained with alcohol and the meat of pig are prohibited according their interpretation of Islam a time of Prophet Muhammad 1400 year ago.

At that time, there were no science and technology available to check out animal health.
Therefore, Allah and Prophet forbid to eat the meat of pig and forbid to drink alcohol.

Old Muslim clerics stressed however, that Muslims should be careful not to eat in dishes previously used for serving pork or alcohol. This is unreasonable,or outrageous faith.
    .
They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, “In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people. But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit.” They also ask you what to give to charity: say, “The excess.” GOD thus clarifies the revelations for you, that you may reflect. .
    .
He only prohibits for you the eating of animals that die of themselves (without human interference), blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than GOD. If one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or deliberate, he incurs no sin. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful. [QS.2:173] [QS.5:3].
    ,
Verily, all meat of animals and all kind of drinks that harm health of people is forbidden by Allah’s law. Even though, government has no right to forbid people from eating the meat of pig and drinking from alcohol.
    .
But Allah said above, you drink a little of bit is OK, if it is good for your health.

How ever, even the meat of pig and alcohol are forbidden in Islam, but Allah never asked Prophet Muhammad to punish those who still eat the meat of pig and those who drink alcohol.

All Allah’s law are just warning, not compulsion. As Allah said clearly in Bible and Al Quran.
