Saudi Arabia reiterated on Sunday that it would make every effort to root out terrorism and urged all Arab countries to join forces to confront the danger that threatens their security and stability.
“The Kingdom denounces all forms of terrorist activities witnessed by Arab countries, including Egypt, Bahrain and Yemen,” said Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal.
Addressing a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo, he said: “Saudi Arabia has confronted terrorism not by talk but by action and enacted laws that incriminate terrorism and terrorist organizations.”
Meanwhile, a number of Islamic scholars, including Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, head of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, have backed the Kingdom’s decision that formally declared the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.
Al-Sudais said the royal decree urging authorities to imprison militants going abroad to take part in fighting was aimed at bolstering Muslim unity. “The Interior Ministry’s statement comes to implement the royal decree.”
He urged Saudis to follow their rulers instead of supporting groups with a political agenda. “National security and stability is a red line that nobody should cross,” he insisted.
The UAE has thrown its support behind Saudi Arabia’s decision to label the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.
The UAE said it would cooperate with Saudi Arabia to tackle “those terrorist groups by eliminating all forms of material and moral support.”
The UAE has jailed dozens of people allegedly linked to Brotherhood-affiliated groups on state security charges over the past year. It accuses some groups of trying to topple its Western-backed ruling system.
The nation’s top court last week sentenced a Qatari doctor to seven years and two Emiratis to five years in prison for collaborating with an illegal group. The same court in January convicted 30 men, most of them Egyptians, of setting up an illegal Brotherhood branch in the UAE. They received prison terms ranging from three months to five years.
The Arab League on Sunday endorsed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ rejection of Israel’s demand for recognition as a Jewish state.
“The Council of the Arab League confirms its support for the Palestinian leadership in its effort to end the Israeli occupation over Palestinian lands, and emphasizes its rejection of recognizing Israel as a ‘Jewish state,’” Arab foreign ministers said in a statement in Cairo
