India’s god of cricket retires

Source: Asia Times:

“God” was the label stuck on Tendulkar during his 24 years of test cricket during much of which he was the world’s leading batsman, and one of the biggest success stories the past 50 years. And despite retiring amid recent struggles to get runs, and failing in Friday’s first of two innings to break his 15-year-old jinx of not scoring a century at his home ground, he still notched up 74 runs, caught at slip after playing a late cut. His major milestones, such as over 34,000 international runs, are maybe as insurmountable as winning 15 US Open tennis championships. But even greater was its length of endurance under great expectations, public adulation and media scrutiny.
