A Plea for Caution From Russia: What Putin Has to Say to Americans About Syria

By VLADIMIR V. PUTIN

Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.

The United Nations’ founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and with America’s consent the veto by Security Council permanent members was enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The profound wisdom of this has underpinned the stability of international relations for decades.

No one wants the United Nations to suffer the fate of the League of Nations, which collapsed because it lacked real leverage. This is possible if influential countries bypass the United Nations and take military action without Security Council authorization.

The potential strike by the United States against Syria, despite strong opposition from many countries and major political and religious leaders, including the pope, will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria’s borders. A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilize the Middle East and North Africa. It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance.

Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multireligious country. There are few champions of democracy in Syria. But there are more than enough Qaeda fighters and extremists of all stripes battling the government. The United States State Department has designated Al Nusra Front and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, fighting with the opposition, as terrorist organizations. This internal conflict, fueled by foreign weapons supplied to the opposition, is one of the bloodiest in the world.

  1. Very good letter by Putin. Anyone who tries for diplomacy should be applauded.

It is my strong conviction that Hudur Aqdas (ayyadahu Allah ta’ala bi-nasrihi al-’aziz)’s prayers and his messages to world leaders has influenced this effort towards peace.

  2. Some people doubt the Syrian rebels capacity to launch a Chemical attack. They are very simple minded people. They cannot possibly imagine that it is the Western secret services (including Israel’s) who are behind the rebels and therefore the capacity of these rebels is nearly unlimited. (Saudi/Qatari funds and Israeli/US know-how, what more do you need?)

Amazing how much effort Kerry and all Western nations put into war-mongering. Just imagine the same efforts would have gone into peace-making. We would not only have peace in Syria, but also in Palestine by now!

  3. Who can one trust? Syria was always denying it even possessed chemical weapons…now it is willing to sign agreement to dismantle the program!

    • No, I do not think that Syria was denying that they have the weapons (they cannot, the US and UK ‘kept the receipts’ when they sold it to them). What they denied was using them. They said that the rebels used it and not the Government side. Various reports confirm this, including the UN official Carla del Ponte.

  4. President Putin with the support of China has at last drawn a red line in front of the US and its allies over Syria. Crossing that line would be disastrous.

  5. Good work by the Russian President Putin. I trust that Hadhrat Khalifathul Masih’s(May Allah strengthen his hands.) prayers and his messages to world leaders has influenced this effort towards peace. All leaders should listen to Huzoor’s Friday Sermon dated 13/09/2013. As said by Huzoor in his Friday Serman, we Ahmadi Muslims should pray for the Muslim Umma and for PEACE.

    • I recently asked Huzoor (atba) if among the letters he had sent to world leaders, he had written a letter to Putin. It turns out he did not (at least that is what was then discussed- if anyone knows otherwise plesae do enlighten us). In his Khutba he was positive on Putin’s statement. This is interesting. For some strange reasons Russia has ended up voicing the views of those who feel wronged. This oped by Putin is written very well and is very strong. Even the birghtest American analysts are having a hard time shooting it down. May be (and too early perhaps) this is the beginning of build up of that Prophecy of Promised Messiah in which he mentions Ahamddyya Musilms spread in Russia as grains of sand.

  6. Putin has expressed his views very clearly and in a convincing manner. Whether he really means it one has to wait. Recent past history of Russian aggressive acts in Georgia and Ukraine do not support this thinking of Putin. In whistle blower Snowden matter Russia nailed hard USA. Though one should not doubt the intention of Putin but one should remain cautious that worldly political leaders void of any spiritual guidance hardly think about humanity. Their sole aim remains self vested interests.
