A Compliment in Disguise: Pakistan Government has Banned the Muslim Times

The white stripe in Pakistan flag is supposed to represent minorities, who have very little stake, now, in the present day Pakistan

By Zia H Shah MD, Chief Editor

As of 7th of June, 2013, the Muslim Times has been banned in parts of Pakistan.  When the readers try to log in, instead of our content, they read, “The website is not accessible. The site contains content that is prohibited for viewership from within Pakistan.”

The Muslim Times stands for the religious freedom of every human being, for Universal Brotherhood and Sisterhood and for Separation of Mosque-Church and State, in every country of the world.  Pakistan Government did not say for which of these aspirations, they have chosen to ban us.

At any rate, we in the Muslim Times, take it as a compliment in disguise.  Pakistan has moved us from the stage of ‘ignore,’ to ‘ridicule.’  Mahatma Gandhi, the great sage from India, once remarked, about political oppressors:

First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.

Many of the other news sites, like CNN, Yahoo and the Huffington Post, every so often, indulge in frivolous and obscene and the Muslim Times never does that.  Notwithstanding our principled publication history, Pakistan Government has singled out the Muslim Times, for the honor of being banned.

In some ways they have gone against their own policies as documented in Wikipedia:

In April 2003 the PTCL announced that it would be stepping up monitoring of pornographic websites. “Anti-Islamic” and “blasphemous” sites were also monitored.[4] In early March 2004, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) ordered Internet service providers (ISPs) to monitor access to all pornographic content.

We, in the Muslim Times, pray to Almighty Allah that let this trial imposed on us, by the myopic Pakistan Government, be a source of more and better readers.  May His decree enable our readers outside Pakistan to share our worth while content with their friends and family, in Pakistan, through email, phone and other means.

  1. Dear Muslim Times
While it is a sad news that the government of Pakistan has banned MT, I permit myself to tell you; I told you so.
If you remember, I have been advising you to focus your criticism on the governmental policies, religious discrimination and horrible treatment of other minorities but do not attack Pakistanis and Pakistan as a country and nation.
I have been reading and commenting on MT for a year or so. I have noticed an increase in your anti-Pakistan articles, links and never an article on any good side of the Pakistani society.
On top of that you continuously pit mainstream Islam against Ahmadiyat and leave an impression that those who do not subscribe to your interpretations are bad Muslims.
This confrontational attitude, I am sorry to say has perhaps annoyed the authorities. We may disagree with their tactics but you should also correct your way of doing things.
I am saying that because I sympathise with the minorities and would like another Pakistan. The plight of minorities including Ahmadies must change but it can only come with international attention and campaigning.

    Kind regards

    • Bashy Quraishy: I do think that we should consider all your comments seriously. Regarding the banning of The Muslim Times in Pakistan however do you not think that our ‘pro-Ahmadiyya stance’ may be the reason rather than our occasional ‘anti-Pakistan-stance’?

  2. We don’t say all muslims are bad, we respect every human, but those
who do crime against us we have the right to say bad against them,
even if it is governament of Pakistan. Mostly now a days authorities
in Pakistan they are involved against us, they are not doing Justice,
so we have the right to criticize them.
On the other hand we claim that ALLAH is with us so they can go on
doing against us what ever they like, but they will be puinshed by Allah.

  3. Mr.Bashey Quraishy deserves pat for his critical/corrective comments on the contents of the printed material in the TMT and one hopes he will continue this ‘labor of love’ aimed at seeking truth in printed media, in future too. But the Government of Pakistan must realize and it be made to know that banning is no solution of any problem, it is in fact a sort of accepting your own defeat when you feel you can not answer or argue your point of view under discussion so the easiest way to get rid of such uncomfortable situation, a ban is imposed.

  4. I respectfully disagree with Bashy Quraishy comments. I also read the Muslim Times regularly and my inference is different.

Is talking against blasphemy law in its current form anti-Pakistan?

Is taliking about seperation of Mosque and state anti Pakistan?

Is talking about freedom of religion anti Pakistan?

Is talking about the right of every citizen to vote anti Pakistan?

Is talking against forced marriages of the hindu Pakistanis anti-Pakistan?

Is talking against burning od the chritian Pakistani homes anti-Pakistan?

Is talking agaiinst the way thePakistanis conducted themselves on Friday september 12 2012,anti-Pakistan?

Is talking against the murders of the shia Muslims anti Pakistan?

Is talking against the law requiring 4 witnesses and ignoring DNA evidence for the crime of rape anti-Pakistan?

Is talking about an unjust election anti Pakistan?

Are the Daily times, Dawn, Dunya News,PTI, LUBP anti-Pakistan?

Pakistan nurtures terrorists and enables persecution. Speaking against that is not anti-Pakistan.

I don’t think that Hassen Nisar, Yasser Hamdani etc are anti Pakistan?

I don’t think youtube is anti Pakistan.

It is time that Pakistan looks at itself in a mirror.

  5. Erm … I am in Islamabad, Pakistan writing this comment and … I’m sorry what is the source of this news?

Someone also told me MTA was banned today but it is working fine. Using wi-tribe connection.

Also, I did a google and didn’t find any press release pointing to the banning of these sites.

Can someone please quote sources and can people from other cities of Pakistan verify this?

Anyways as far as my house is concerned MTA, Alislam, MT, AT, etc. working just fine.

  6. Dear commentators at Muslim Times
Thanks fro a good discussion. In my original comment, I raised certain issues regarding the banning of MT in Pakistan and how I see the situation of minorities including Ahamdies in
Pakistan being covered in this esteemed online newspaper.

If I thought that MT was a bad publication, I would not bother to read it or comment in it.
MT raises many important issues in its daily coverage of Islam, Muslim communities around the world and of course the situation in Pakistan. It is commendable and must be done.

Having said that I must also express my views as to how many articles, especially from Indian Muslims ( which, I have also complained about) are outright anti-Pakistan and not critical.

For me and other Pakistanis including the readers of MT, there should be a difference between valid criticism of actual situation and putting a question mark on the integrity of a country. Besides, being a media person, I know how the power of suggestion, headlines and insinuations can misinform and reinforce the prejudices. I see that all the time in Islamophobic statements and anti-Islam propaganda in the West.

I would suggest that in future we should attack strongly the acts of violence against minorities, sectarian militancy and religious extremism, with naming it Pakistani or done by Pakistanis. Yes, the people who commit such horrendous acts do live in Pakistan but so do other 200 million people who are not part of such acts but are victims of such violence. It is not the country, nation or government, which should be targeted by individuals or groups. Ahmadis, Christians, Hindus and other minorities living in Pakistan are also Pakistanis.
It is non-sense to suggest that Pakistan natures terrorists as Dr. Boodhun is saying. It is the argument, I often hear from India and anti-Pakistan forces in USA. Even CIA has said that there is no proof of such claims.
As far as Mr. Tschannen’s argument that MT’s banning has something to do with its ‘pro-Ahmadiyya stance’ is concerned, no one knows. It may be so but there are many very critical voices in Pakistan who are not banned. Press is very free, actually too free sometimes and no one dares to ban them.

I agree with Mr. Afaqi that Governmnet of Pakistan should be made to realize that what it has done is wrong. I would suggest that you write to the authorities in Information Ministry and ask them the reasons for the ban.
If they do not answer, then ask some critical journalists in Pakistan to take up the case under the freedom of press act. Do not make it a question of Ahmadiyat or Pakistan but the question of Freedom of the press. Put the ball in their court.
    Kind regards
    Bashy Quraishy

    • Dear Mr. Qureshi I would like to be educated on difference between 200 million people and the state they represent through state institutions. Pakistani constitution is theocratic because it defines a Muslim as a legal entity. Ordinance XX criminalizes all aspects of Ahmadiyya Muslim life. Muslims of United India asked for and got a state for themselves based on having a separate electorate for a minority. So a minority asked for and got what it wanted. Pakistan’s 200 million people represented through its election commission and constitution impose a separate electorate on Ahmadiyya Muslims- what does that mean- if separate electorate was the basis of formation of Pakistan, what is Pakistani state telling Ahmadis by imposing one on them? A constitution is a sin-qua-non of a state. So if we condemn Pakistani constitution how do we satisfy people like you that this constitution does not represent Pakistan?
If you have a Pakistani Passport, you have must have signed a statement that condemns the founder of Ahmadiyya Muslims to be registered as a Muslim Pakistani, did you do that?

Please remember that Pakistan’s founding leading lights were all minority- Jinnah, a Bhora Shia, Aga Khan an Ismaili Shia and Zafarullah an Ahmadi Muslim. Bengalis were in the leading position when it came to independence. What did the current Pakistani establishment do to the Bengali Minority for them to separate? Should that not be condemned. Why has the state of Pakistan not published Munir Commission, Hamood ur Rahman Commission and Justice Samdani Reports? Should that not be criticized?

There is state backed discrimination at every step of the way in Pakistan including the Ahmadi children getting to schools. What do you call that when it is enshrined in and backed up by provinicial authorities? where do you separate the boundaries between people, the state they represent through elected and selected state institutions?

yes I agree that in general Pakistani poeple are secular and tolerant but what keeps them from coming out on the street on violations of human rights? What went through the mind of 90 million people who registered to vote adhering to the requirement to declare the founder of Ahmadiyya movemnet as an imposter. Did they not have the moral courage to question what has that got to do with the thier right to vote?

I think you are walking a thin line when you try to continously support Pakistan without really condemnning what the majority is doing by keeping silent and becoming accomplices of the opressors.

Finally I am curious when you use the word minority for Ahmadiyya Muslims. Please clarify what do you say when you state that. You know we are and we consider ourselves Muslims. Do you have a problem in calling us a Muslim minority?

Remember that in the current apartheid based electoral system of Pakistan only Ahmadiyya Muslims were singled out for separate electorate so when you talk about minorities like Shias or Christians its not the same. Please do not gloss over the injustices to us by bundling us with other- “minorities”.
      Many thanks

  7. A couple of small but important corrections:

    1. I would suggest that in future we should attack strongly the acts of violence against minorities, sectarian militancy and religious extremism, without naming it Pakistani or done by Pakistanis.

The word is without and not with.

    2. It is not the country, nation or government, which should be targeted but individuals or groups.

The word is but and not by.

Sorry for the mistakes. It is late in the night and I am a bit sleepy.

  8. TMT….Please submit proof of your news that TMT is banned in Pakistan. This is in light of the comment published by K. T. Shamim.
Please either reject the statement of K. T. Shamim and specify the areas in Pakistan where The Muslim times is not available. Please authenticate your claim and news.
    Thanks.

  9. Mr.Quraishi:If you remember, I have been advising you to focus your criticism on the governmental policies, religious discrimination and horrible treatment of other minorities but do not attack Pakistanis and Pakistan as a country and nation.

Comment:focus your criticism on the governmental policies (which government?), religious discrimination (where, which country?) and horrible treatment of other minorities (where and which country?) Perhaps you meant that Ahmadiya Times should high light the bad state of other minorities and should not mention its own troubles? Or, there is suggestion to chase shadows!

Mr. Quraishi: I have been reading and commenting on MT for a year or so. I have noticed an increase in your anti-Pakistan articles, links and never an article on any good side of the Pakistani society.

Comment: perhaps you mean that only a news should be given without any comments. I believe, even if the MTM praised the works of Pakistan, the bad elements there would not allow anything good for the Ahmadis.

Mr. Quraishi: On top of that you continuously pit mainstream Islam against Ahmadiyat and leave an impression that those who do not subscribe to your interpretations are bad Muslims.

This confrontational attitude, I am sorry to say has perhaps annoyed the authorities.

Comment: The mainstream Islam of Pakistan was already pitted against the Ahmadis. The bad laws they made are there. Now even if the Ahmadis remain quiet and do not speak (mention) about those bad things, there is no use. Suffering will remain, will continue.

The situation now is that MTM is doing its job of spreading information. Many people read that. The maulvis who are behind all the bad laws do not want any one to find out about what they are doing. That is why they have tried to impose the ban.

Let us wait and see. It will be a litmus test for the new Government of Nawaz Sharif sahib. The cat cannot remain in the bag for a long time, and the new government is also in a hurry.

  10. TheMuslimTimes (we) have indeed been honored by being banned!Masha’Allah, we got a national recognition, excellent!…and that’s for standing up to speak truth and about Justice.

  11. I do not think banning TMT in Pakistan should be taken as a compliment and get thrilled. Let it pass, that is more graceful.

And to Mr.Bashy: US strategy in AfPak region is to keep the national psyche of Pakistanis and Afghans on a “negative religious mode”. That started soon after the state of Pakistan came into being. The religious leadership, intentionally or unintentionally, played their role of merging the “state” and the “mosque”. Political leadership followed suit and turned the constitution into a “theocratic” document. 1973 constitution is not a secular document but has turned the state of Pakistan into a theocratic state. And yet it is claimed that the system is “democratic”.

The ground reality in Pakistan is that over the years the national psyche has drifted towards religious extremism and intolerance. The results of 11th May elections, whether engineered or not, indicate the drift. Scientific thought and approach to solve countries problems remain beyond the scope of such a national mindset.

To come out of this quagmire needs a surgical operation. The instruments of such an operation requires the Indus Wisdom and not “borrowed philosphies or systems” like “western democracy” from the west nor the earlier experiment with “socialism” and “miltant Islam” of Zia days.

TMT and MTA and other such media outlets are some of the instruments which are trying to bring the ship- Pakistan- on an even keel.

  12. All Ahmadis irrespective of their nationalities love Pakistan because their headquarters is in Pakistan, their holy personages are buried there. Ahmadis from Pakistan of Pakistani origin only hate or criticize anti Pakistan policies of Pakistani government, mullahs and their associates. Ahmadis advocate for removal of all discriminatory policies and laws against them. Ahmadis are Muslims so they declare themselves and not non-Muslim as often they are branded as minority along with other non-Muslim minorities who declare themselves non-Muslim. Readers must understand this difference and draw line. Pakistani people and Pakistani government and Pakistani Mullahs and conduct and roles need to be understood carefully. Any Muslim living outside Pakistan of different nationality do not require to denounce [blaspheme] the founder of Ahmadi Community as a part of his or her declaration to be Muslim. On the face of it, it is biggest forgery and blasphemy committed in Pakistan with the definition of Muslim and or Islam to include denunciation of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. In a way announcing to the whole world that Promised Messiah has come but the Pakistanis have officially and formally rejected it by governmental declaration of Muslim in Pakistan to obtain ID card, Passport, vote or be voted for. It is nonsense and nonsense must be called as nonsense.

  13. Hello folks.

I am in Islamabad. Am reading MT from my computer using local DSL link.

Who said that MT is banned here?

Looks like someone is trying to get publicity by declaring that MT is banned in Pakistan.

Frankly, I think that there is more open discussion in Pakistan about different religions and minorities than most other countries. Extremists exist everywhere and we have some here too. But the vast vast majority are extremely tolerant. This is unlike many of the Western countries were even innocuous looking headscarves are banned.

    Where is the freedom?

  14. I hope the Muslim Times is not banned.

But, I got the information from two independent and reliable sources last week.

Ali Uddin is for good reasons concerned about the religious freedom of the Muslim women in Europe, but, does not remember the draconian laws against the Ahmadi Muslims. Let me share one of the clauses of 1984 oridiance:

Any person of the Quadiani group or the Lahori group (who call themselves ‘Ahmadis’ or by any other name), who, directly or indirectly, poses himself as Muslim, or calls, or refers to, his faith as Islam, or preaches or propagates his faith, or invites others to accept his faith, by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representations, or in any manner whatsoever outrages the religious feelings of Muslims, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine.

  15. I can access Mt both on my ufone PTCL link as well as through Linkdotnet DSL here in Islamabad. These are the larger service providers. Wonder which ones are blocking. Do you have names

  16. Hadhrat Muhammad, saw, was banned to enter MECCA-ALLAH called it “FATEH MUBEEN” and a complete annihilation of the enemies of ISLAM was carried out ever-lastingly.The MOON of Islam (MIRZA GHULAM AHMAD,QADIANI- THE PROMISED MESSIAH) reflects the LIGHT of ISLAM(MUHAMMAD,SAW.)and WE AHMADIYYA MUSLIMS are following the foot-steps of OUR BELOVED, THE SEAL OF NABIYEEN HADHRAT MUHAMMAD,SAW WHO HAS BEEN CONTRADICTED BY THE TWISTED & DISTORTED SO CALLED CONSTITUTION OF PAKISTAN-PROPHET OF ISLAM SAYS ONE JAMM’T WOULD BE “MUSLIM” AND OTHER 72 SECTS OF SO-CALLED MUSLIMS WOULD BE HELL-BOUND. PAKISTAN GOVT. OF MR NAWAZ SHARIF SHOULD FOLLOW MUHAMMAD,SAW AND RESCIND THE “ANTI-ISLAMIC” law and AMEND THE CONSTITUTION OF PAKISTAN TO CREATE REAL “ISLAMIC JUSTICE PRACTISED BY MUHAMMAD.SAW AS THE FIRST ISLAMIC HEAD OF STATE IN MEDINA”. I humbly request Mr Nawaz Sharif to LEARN A LESSON FROM THE RULER OF RULERS, FOLLOWER OF THE HOLY QURAN MUHAMMAD,SAW WHO WAS, IS AND WOULD ALWAYS BE THE EXCELLENT EXAMPLAR OF “REAL DEMOCRACY” FOR HUMANITY UNTIL THIS WORLD ENDS. 17. Congratulations!!! The Pakistan Govt. by banning The Muslim Times has admitted that it has strong influence upon its readers. This is a very strong evidence of their defeat because they have resorted to power abuse instead of educating the masses.
“They will hate you as long as they are afraid of you.”

  18. This is a compliment to The Muslim Times editorial staff from a bigoted government. Mullas rule that country, with different colors and stripes. TMT will continue bring people out of ignorance.

  19. Here, I want to echo and highlight two of the excellent suggestions made by Bashy Quraishy.

Firstly, we should separate the facts from our editorial comments as much as possible, and let the readers see them separately.

Secondly, in our criticism of certain groups in Pakistan, we should try our best to separate out the extremists from the moderates. We condemn and criticize the former but the latter we want to salvage.

As Ahmadi Muslims we do not want the West to stereotype us with the extremists, when they look at the Muslims. We want the West to see our stance of ‘Love for all and hatred for none.’ In the same tone we can extend this courtesy to moderate non-Ahmadi Muslims as much as possible.

However, we can certainly show them by evidence, whenever the moderate non-Ahmadi Muslims fail to stand up for the oppressed and choose to join the oppressor by their actions or complete inaction, in face of atrocities and injustice.

Sometimes our inaction also condemns us. After all, if you see a rape being committed in front of your eyes and do not even bother to call 911, there is something missing. This reminds me of the famous Hadith:

Whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest of faith. (Related by Muslim)

We very much appreciate those non-Ahmadi Muslims whe join us in our struggle for our basic human rights in Pakistan. We also appreciate those, who at least speak up for them. However, those who fail to see the systematic abuse of our rights since 1974, for whatever reason, according to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, have fallen below the level of minimal decency.

  20. By installation of any software like ” HOTSPOT SHIELD” etc you can easy open http://www.themuslimtimes.org
Our world is a global village. No one can ban any thing. You can only close your eyes and ears but not can not ban, especially the Truth have to spread one way or the other.

  21. It is nice and very satisfying to note that The Muslim Times is being regularly read by so many keenly interested people of different roots and origins and one positive result has come to light through the keen observations made by the TMT Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Zia Shah Sahib. Jazakallah.
Anyhow, this scribe has a wish and strongly hopes that no one will ever be able to ban on-line ‘TMT’ and this great source of correct news and true knowledge, will continue to serve the cause of the Truth-Seekers, throughout the world.
But here, let TMT readers and the MTA viewers, too, know this painful fact of the Print media that ‘The Lahore’ weekly , owned and published by an Ahmadi Muslim individual( family of late Saqib Zervi Sahib) is not being allowed its publication for the last so many months.
Moreover, one Publication Press of Lahore city, owned and run by the famous ‘Panipatti’ family of Ahmadia roots, has been sealed and closed by the local administration of the Punjab, Caretaker Chief Minister Mr. Najam Sethi and many of its workers are put behind the bar for he last so many months. No reason has been given for these illegal acts and no one in the administration seem willing to tell you the reason behind such non sense acts of banning a Weekly and sealing off a Press belonging to Ahmadi citizens of Pakistan. What you Mr Bashy Quraishy would like to call these acts of irresponsibility, almost bordering to a sort of ‘Terrorism’ against the constitutionally created minority sect of Ahmadis.
One hopes and pray that better sense will prevail over the mind and thinking of the of the newly elected rulers of the Punjab and all such wrongs and injustices being done to the Ahmadis will be undone at the earliest possible time.

  22. Banning speech leads to extreme disturbance and discomfort. The basic problem of Pre-islamic Makkah city was banning of speech.

The prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. allowed every one to speak. His opponents said they will not allow him to speak openly in public.
So the struggle went to its due end and result was the downfall of the Makkan polytheists.

It took 22 years but the wrong doers were defeated. Whatever happens, Nawaz Government may rule peacefully, caring for all. If his government will not allow equal rights to every one, as were granted by the prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. when he arrived in the city of Yathrab (later named Madinah); he gave full liberty to Jews and Christians and atheists; that is an example (Sunnah) and the right way. There is no other way.

There is no filth in any Ahmadiyah publication / printed matter. There is no incitement to rebellion or challenge to the government. Then why those books should be banned !

If the government wants to proceed by the Islamic law then they should first learn the important basics of Islam. No harm. Welcome and go by the real peaceful Islam. Nobody will object to that.

But for the time being, it is better not to indulge into that. It is better to leave the religion alone and out of politics. Every one should practice the real teachings of Islam and mould their lives as a good Muslim. That will be an example and then they can bring religion into politics (and there will be no need to do that).

  23. Salam All.If you want to access this site,i highly encourage you to use a program called HotSpot Shield, newest version available. It will help you and me to fight these evils and the injustice going on with the people of Pakistan.

  24. TMT is banned here in Rabwah too I’m opening it via spotflux . It can also opened by other proxys .

  25. I’m in Rabwah…oh I mean Chenab Nagar, and have been accessing TMT regularly for the last few days, but today when I clicked on the piece with the caption “Wrongly understood Shab-e-Meraj: Journey of the Prophet Mohammad (saw) to Heaven” I got the following message:”The website is not accessible. The site contains content that is prohibited for viewership from within Pakistan.”
However, on trying persistently, I got through successfully!
So, there IS something fishy! But that should be neither surprising nor exciting!!

  26. Ok so do India and Pakistan not like each other? I’m totally in the dark on this but this is what I gather from the comments. Please elaborate

  27. I read Bashy Quarishi Sahib’s comments written with extreme decorum. I liked it, though I do not agree with his views. Few comments that followed have adequately answered all his doubts, so that I abstain from commenting. I am grateful to him for his sharing with the oppressed section’s anguish and helplessness, but same time he was trying to vindicate the Government’s stand. What we actually find in Pakistan is baffling. The miscreants religious fanatics are given free hand to take the law and order in their hands, making the Government machineries totally inactive. Why Government is not taking action to nullify the infamous Blasphemy Act which is condemned by civilized countries and
societies world over ? What right has the government to rename Ahmadiyya HQ in Pakistan (from Rabwah to Chinab City?) You will find that Ahmadiyya Khalifa in his Friday sermon always asks his followers to pray for Pakistan and it subject’s welfare, which shows his love towards them. Wassalam.
