In order to prove the physical ascension of Jesus Christ as to the heavens, non-Ahmadi Muslim scholars argue that the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa also ascended bodily to the heavens during M`erāj. Therefore, they say that it is not impossible for a human being to physically go to the heavens.

Contrary to this claim, the Holy Qur`ān and Hadīth prove that the ascension of the Holy Prophet sa was spiritual and not physical. Many ahadīth also prove that al-Isra and M`erāj are two separate incidents. The incident of M`erāj happened in 5th year of his prophethood at the time when the Holy Prophet sa was sleeping in Ka`aba. Whereas, the Isra incident happened in 11th year of Prophethood while the Holy Prophetsa was sleeping in his cousin Ummi Hānī’s ra home. The fact that he was sleeping in both cases clearly demonstrates that these incidents were spiritual and not physical.

NOT EYES BUT HEART SAW

If the Holy Prophet sa had ascended physically, he would have seen God with his physical eyes. But the Holy Qur`ān and Hadīth mentions that he saw God through his heart.

“The heart of the Prophet lied not in seeing what he saw.” (53:12)

“And We made not the Vision which We showed thee but as a trial for men…” (17:61)

“Ibni Abbas ra relates that the Holy Prophet sa saw Allah two times through his heart.” (Muslim Kitab-ul-Īman)

Hadhrat Ayesha ra says:

“Whosoever thinks that Prophet Muhammad sa saw his Lord, he surely attributed a great lie on God…Haven’t you heard that Allāh says that the eyes do not reach Him but He reaches the eyes.” (Muslim Kitab-ul-Īman – Book of Faith)

DEMAND OF MAKKAN DISBELIEVERS

Disbelievers of Makka said to the Holy Prophet sa that they wouldn’t believe him unless he ascended to the heavens and then descend a book upon them. Upon this demand, Allāh asked the Holy Prophet sa to tell them that Allāh is free from any defect.  It means that He has not ever raised anyone physically to the heavens and that the Holy Prophet sa is nothing but a human and a Prophet. Therefore, if non-Ahmadi Muslims consider Jesus Christ as to have ascended physically to the heavens, then they must believe that he is not a human and a Messenger.

“…or you ascend up into heaven; and we will not believe in your ascension until you send down to us a Book that we can read.’ Say, ‘Holy is my Lord! I am but a mortal sent as a Messenger.’ (17:94)

SLEPT IN KA`ABA—WOKE UP IN KA`ABA

The following hadīth mentioned in Bukhari categorically proves that this journey was spiritual. In the beginning this hadīth states that the Holy Prophet sa was sleeping in Ka`aba and it ends with the words that when he woke-up, he was still in Ka`aba. This shows that the whole vision was seen by his heart that was awake while his eyes were sleeping.

“And he was sleeping in Ka`aba…His heart was awake but his eyes were sleeping but his heart was not sleeping…and when he woke-up, he was in Ka`aba.” (Bukhari Kitab-ul-Tauheed)

HIS BODY DID NOT DISAPPEAR

Hadhrat Ayesha ra states, swearing to God, that during M`eraaj, the body of the Holy Prophet sa did not disappear.

“By God, the body of the Holy Prophet sa did not disappear, but he was raised spiritually. (Tafseer Kashāf)

  1. THE ARGUMENT IS UNECESSARY, BUT THE BLIEF IN ALLAH, HIS MESSENGER AND MESSAGE AND WHAT EVER THE PROPHET SAYS OR DOES.
SECONDLY, IT IS UNFORTUNATE FOF MUSLIMS TO DEVIDE THEMSELVES INTO SECTS THIS CALLIING THAT WITH NAMES WHEN A L L A H SWT SAYS IN THE HOLY QUR’AN WA’ATASIMU BI HABLILLAHI JAMI’AN WALA TAFARRAQU.

PLEASE ALL MUSLIM UNITE IN THE SPRIT OF ALLAH DO NOT BE DIVIDED. LET US BE CALLED AND RECOGNISED BY THE NAME MUSLIMS WHICH ALLAH GAVE US AND NOT WAHABIS, SHI’A, SUNNI, AHMADIS OR AHMADIYYA, IZALAS , OTHER DAREEQATS, THESE ARE NAMESTHAT DEVIDE US NOT UNITE US.LET US FOLLOW THE TEACHING OF THE FINAL PROPHET AND HATIMUL ANBIYA MUHAMMADU-RRASULULLAH IBNU ABDULLAHI, AND HIS UP RIGHT CALIPHS. IF WE DO NOT DO THAT WE WILL BECOME LIKE THE NON MUSLIMS.
MAY ALLAH SHOW US THE RIGHT PATH AMEEN

  2. Dear YUSUFU NAWAWI, after reading the opening post, you have given a good advice, to unite. That is very good. But you said nothing about the nature of M’eraj un Nabi s.a.w.s. Was it bodily ascension or spiritual?
We do not want to disbelieve. We need to know the truth without any quarrel. Wrong beliefs have been the cause of many disputes.
When a teacher, a prophet, a reformer comes, it is his duty to guide the people to right beliefs, to take them out of darkness into light.
There is no use uniting the people with totally differing (wrong and bad) beliefs.
After reading the OP, I believe that the ascension of the prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. was spiritual and not physical. That belief gives me some satisfaction. And the belief in physically going to heavens does not appear right to me.

  3. Sahih International
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
    17:1

when Quran clearly saying that “Exalted is He WHO TOOK HIS SERVANT BY BIGHT FROM al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa,” then why you people referring ahadiths.

  4. Shaikh sahib, that verse has to be interpreted wisely in the light of many other verses and sayings of the prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s.
Other verses prove that it was a vision i.e. a true dream. Allah arranges such visions care of the angels. There was no bodily travel necessary for that.
For YUSUFU NAWAWI sahib, it is good to unite the Muslims. So please teach them to be very peaceful first. Then guide them to the true meanings of verses peacefully with love so the differences are removed. We have to satisfy the minds first and put them at rest.
It is the many wrong meanings of verses that are dividing the Muslim Ummah (Nation). Try to remove the wrong teachings peacefully and all will become okay.
After that Muslims can preach to non-Muslims. How can we preach to the non-Muslims when our own house is not in order?
And note that some (or many) Muslim leaders are teaching and preaching against the Jama’at Ahmadiyah. The Mullas are telling the poor Muslims not to read or touch the books of the Imam Mahdi a.s. Is unity possible under such conditions?? Not possible. It is a grave sin to misguide any one.

    • Re ‘bodily travel’: I know someone personally who had an ‘out-of-body-experience’. Consequently I researched a bit and found many on the internet with such experience. The ‘normal’ person usually only went ‘out-of-body’ a short distance, like a few meters / yards. My personal interpretation is that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be open him, had something similar like an ‘out-of-body-experience’. As he was a Prophet (sas) Allah enabled him to travel far, but basically using the same ‘natural law’. (Just my ‘unscientific’ thoughts…).

      • Brother Hammd Quran 53:12 is Surah Najm which translates to “The heart did not lie(about)what it saw”
Quran 17:61 is Surah Al Isra translation “When we said to the angels Prostate to adam,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.

It would not possible for me to search the relevent verses . You could try uploading a program that lets you search phrases. Myad51

      • Limitless in His glory is He who transported His servant by night from the Inviolable House of Worship [at Mecca] to the Remote House of Worship [at Jerusalem] – the environs of which We had blessed – so that We might show him some of Our symbols: for, verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-seeing

        ADVANCE HEART SURGERY
Angel Jibriel alongwith two other angels visited the holy Prophet (Pbuh) one night, while he was asleep in the Hateem part of Ka’abah. The angel then operated upon his heart and made some changes probably because the material body could not withstand the space travel with the required velocity without certain protection. The related part of the narration reads; “… Jibriel among them took upon himself to make a cut from the throat down to a part below the heart of the Prophet till he emptied the chest and the stomach. Then with his hands he washed it with Zamzam water till the stomach was cleaned. Then was brought a golden tray in which was a golden light filled with faith and wisdom. Pouring it inside, the chest and the veins of throat were filled up. Then the opened part was closed…” (Bukhari)

By incorporating the changes in the body system, his body was probably converted from material into Noorani (lightening) body to withstand the journey of space.

The journey of meraj was just a fraction of night. Prophet Muhammad mounted the Buraq, and in the company of Gabriel, they traveled to the “farthest mosque- masjid-e-Aqsa.

ABOUT BURAQ:-If someone doesn’t know about an aeroplane. He has travelled for a month to reach a place and if someone makes him wait at an airport and tells him, wait I will be back from that place within an hour,he propably won’t believe him.But today modern science has made it all possible,

Hadiths clearly state that Burraq is a white mule-like animal. There is no mention of wings. Only earthly animals with material bodies need wings to fly against the gravitational force. The basic constituent of Burraq’s body, as the word indicates, is electrical energy, instead of the elements of earth. There is nothing unscientific about this. The realities pertaining to the subjects which science has not covered yet cannot be termed unscientific. Science has not comprehended till date, the subject of spirits and spiritual bodies. There are a large number of Allah’s creations that are invisible to human eyes, as human sight can only comprehend the matter and not energy. The angels and the Jinns possess non-material bodies constituted of light and heat energies. The existence of other beings should not be unbelievable

        TELECOMMUNICATION-ALLAH’S COMMUNICATIONS WITH PROPHETS
A telecommunication is a matter of thing discovered only recently. But 1400 years ago, when Prophet Muhammad arrived from the night journey,”isra”,Some people were taken aback by the impropability of the story which the messenger of Allah had to tell after such a divine exposure. A Quraysh delegation hastened to go and question Abu Bakr about his mad and senseless friend, but his immediate, forthright answer surprised them: ”If he says such a thing, it cannot but be true!” A few weeks later, facts confirmed some elements of his account, for instance the arrival of caravans whose coming he had announced (having seen them on his way back) and of which he had given a precise description.166045_10152892718835608_1989457529_n The people asked the prophet that if he had been to masjid-e aqsa, then he should tell them how many pillars had he seen? Now the prophet wasn’t there to count the pillars, yet the people insisted that he tell them the description of Masjid -e aqsa or they won’t believe. So Allah showed him the details “right in front of his eyes” and he described what he had seen “stone by stone, brick by brick”. The travelers confirmed his descriptions and answered every fine detail. Now with the modern advances in science,we can deliver our lectures and see an event live and reach to a million of people but it was not the same 1400 yrs back.
        ANOTHER EXPLANATION FROM QURAN

The Qur’an in Surah Israa, in which the advent is mentioned, indicates the state in which the Prophet (Pbuh) was carried to his journey. It says; “… And we made not the vision which we showed you, but a trial for mankind..” (17:60)

It was neither a dream nor the state of wakefulness in the material sense. The Qur’anic word for the vision is ‘Ru’ya’ which is different from a dream. We find in one of the Hadiths describing Me’raj thus; “… They (the angels) came in such a state that the heart (of the Prophet) was seeing them. The eyes were asleep but the heart was awake. Likewise, the eyes of (all) the Prophets sleep but their hearts do not sleep..” (Bukhari; Kitab-ut-Tauhid; Narration of Abu Hurairah)

The above narration of Me’raj in Bukhari, which is a very lengthy one, ends with the following words; “..And when he (Muhammad r woke up, he was in Masjid-il-Haram (Ka’abah).” (Ibid).

So, the material body of the Prophet (Pbuh) was in a state of sleep after the Me’raj, while during the vision his transcendental body actually visited the places and witnessed the signs of Allah. In sleep he was taken and to sleep he was returned before and after the journey. During the journey, he was not asleep. He saw and witnessed everything with a transcendental body and with eyes, which were not material. Such is the vision of Prophets.

  5. If this journey was spiritual—the namaz was also visionary. Why Allah took him to Masjid e Aqsa from Masjid e haram. Kaaba was not the right place for vision. Maulana Tariq Jameel said Allah Himself came down and took him to skies. So every action of the prophet may have not been physical. Secondly question arises why he could not be taken to skies direct from Kaaba?

  6. Reblogged this on Progressive Islam. and commented:
    FROM PROGRESSIVE MUSLIM VIEW
The unbelievers cannot believe in unseen like God, angel, Evil and Heaven. It is not easy to convince them. I have tried many times.

Of course unbeliever cannot believe that:
The physical ascension of Jesus Christ as and the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa also ascended bodily to the heavens during M`erāj.

Therefore, they -unbelievers —say that it is impossible for a human being to physically go to the heavens.

I recommand unbelievers to JOIN “SUBUD”, and you can feel the Power of God in your body. Please seach Google—Subud International.

Hopefully you can realize that the existance of God every where on earth.

    All ❤️

  7. If you believe in the Qur’an—-Believe all what is said in it? If you believe in the Prophet —–Blieve in all what he said? Does it not sound good.Actually the Mullahs and other scholars tamper with the AYAATS of the Quran when the Translate. They want to be famous among the ignorants. Shame.
