“Burkas for babies”: Saudi cleric’s new fatwa causes controversy

By Mohammad Alyousei: Al Arabiya

A Saudi cleric has called for all female babies to be fully covered by wearing the face veil, commonly known as the burka, citing reports of little girls being sexually molested.

In a TV interview on the Islamic al-Majd TV, which seems to date back to mid-last year, Sheikh Abdullah Daoud, stressed that wearing the veil will protect baby girls. The Sheikh tried to back his assertion with claims of sexual molestation against babies in the kingdom, quoting unnamed medical and security sources.

Recently picked up on social media, Sheikh Dauod’s statement prompted wide condemnation from his fellow Saudis on Twitter. Some tweeps called for the Sheikh to be held accountable because his ruling denigrates Islam and breaches individual privacy.

  1. Stupidest thing I have ever heard!!
Just because some men act like animals!!
How about start castrating these animals for starters! That would be a good deterrent, I am sure.
    Just plain disgusting!

  2. Islam has prescribed women’s dress code to address the natural inclinations of men and women. There is nothing natural about anyone being sexually attracted to babies. It’s indicative of a diseased mind and these people should be put in jail and given psychological rehab.

It’s also illogical on another plane as well. If you put fully veiled women in confined spaces with sick, demented men who are prone to abusing women, and these women have no means of self defense, the veils are not going to deter the men from attacking them. So these babies who have apparently been left alone with sickos will still not be safe.

Also, babies are generally not left alone with strangers…we know this much from such cases in the Western society; it’s usually relatives and acquaintances who have access to children …so there is a whole new, even more horrid problem that seems to be at hand if the reports of abused kids are true and it’s not just something conjured up by the religious cleric to come up with this absurd law.

  3. I agree with the veil ( burka ) thing because veil is something which mostly protects the the bad vision’s. But in case of a Sick person any thing is possible.

  4. I don’t know about the rest of you, but, this Saudi ‘law’ is plain daft.

Also, as mentioned by Qudsiya above, small children are usually never left with strangers for obvious reasons. Therefore, if a baby or small child is molested or raped (S. Africa has one of the highest record for rapes..), it will be done by somebody close in the family.

In my country, quite a few little girls get raped by men who are close to them like their fathers, etc.

And as also mentioned men who rape or molest women in general will do this with anyone who’s ‘in skirts’ regardless of a burkha or not. They are SICK in more ways than one!!!
