You don’t need me to tell you that water’s pretty much the healthiest beverage you can guzzle. Past research has shown water can help you lose weight (by filling you up), slightly boost metabolism, and even keep your mind sharp and alert.

Now, new research indicates drinking water—compared to other sugar-sweetened beverages—may help us make healthier food choices. A recent study published in the journal Appetite found that preschoolers snacked on more raw veggies when eaten with water than with a sweetened drink. And a related paper found that young adults preferred the combination of soda and salty, high-calorie foods to soda with veggies. Plus, past research has shown that the more sweet foods we eat, the more we want them—another argument for not drinking our calories and guzzling healthy, hydrating water instead.
