Humans created, designed, evolved or all ? – and what do we teach our children?

Are the windows to the soul the fearfully and wonderfully made creation of a sentient deity? Depends on whom you ask.

AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Consider the human eye.

That ocular globe contains a complex array of nerves, cells, muscles and tissues, allowing humans to see in varied lighting, discern depth, perceive distance and analyze that which is before them. Consider the eye’s various interacting parts, like the retina and the lens — both of which would be useless without the other.

Did aeons of evolution and natural selection produce these intricate interworkings?

Or are the windows to the soul the fearfully and wonderfully made creation of a sentient deity?

Depends on whom you ask.

Some, like fundamentalist Pat Robertson, believe there is no reconciliation between scientific and spiritual views of creation’s origin and development.

Others, like the leader of The Human Genome Project, Francis Collins, proclaim their belief in reconciling faith and science.

So who’s right? Or is that even the right question?

Created, designed, evolved — or all of the above?

  1. What should we teach our children?

The short answer is that God created us through evolution! If this is to be taught in school, it can be taught in history, philosophy or religion class but not in science.

Science is about what any or at least many humans can observe if provided the tools. According to the Holy Quran we cannot directly observe God:

Eyes cannot reach Him but He reaches the eyes. And He is the Incomprehensible, the All-Aware. (Al Quran 6:104)
