Aust unis score well in world rankings

SOCIAL sciences league tables released by QS World University Rankings show a creditable performance by Australian institutions.

Only two made the top 10 in any of the six subject areas — the University of Melbourne, ranked nine in law, and the Australian National University, ranked 10 in politics and international studies — but there was a healthy representation in the top 50 for each subject.

The subject areas were statistics and operational research, sociology, politics and international studies, accounting and finance, economics and econometrics, and law.

There were four universities in the top 20 for law and seven in the top 50 for accounting and finance.

QS has released its rankings in subject areas for the first time this year, with social sciences completing the set. The other clusters were in natural sciences, technical subjects, arts and humanities and life sciences and medicine.
