75 Years of Ahmadiyah Indonesia

Seventy-eight years ago the Indonesian state has not been established. At that time the Dutch East Indies Indonesia covering an area are exactly the same as the current state of Indonesia. Dutch East Indies colonial located in the Netherlands, which had governed Indonesia since the 17th century. Nonetheless, Indonesia – otherwise known as the Dutch East Indies – at that time already a country located at the crossroads of major trade routes and international marketing, and has a natural resource incredible, one of the largest in the world – which is already known centuries centuries before the European community know civilization. With this view, it is not surprising that a greedy imperialist countries like the Netherlands and menjajahnya occupied.

When Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Arrived in Singapore on September 22, 2013, he was greeted by delegates of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at from Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia

Seventy-eight years ago, the people of Indonesia has been known as a religious community. Since the 9th century, when European societies are still struggling with the wild and barbarous life and do not know of a high civilization, the kingdoms of Indonesia has been known as a center for study of Buddhist and Hindu religions. The students come from the kingdoms in foreign countries, such as India, China, Cambodia, etc.. to study at the University of Buddhists in South Sumatra to the 9th century. When Islam entered Indonesia, people are starting to convert to Islam, slowly and then rapidly expanded. When the Europeans came to Indonesia, the majority of Indonesian people have converted to Islam. Indonesia later became known as one of the countries with the largest Muslim population in the world.

Hadhrat Khalifat al-Masih the Fourth was the first Caliph to visit the largest Islamic country. Hudhoor’s visit lasted from June 19th to July 11th, 2000.

Seventy-eight years ago, though still in the Dutch colonial modernization of Islam has reached Indonesia. Indonesian Islamic scholars, especially from West Sumatra began developing their ideas on the modernization of Islam. Their influence reaches ordinary people in several countries, as well as the influence of traditional Islamic scholars rooted in several other places in Indonesia.

Seventy-eight years ago, three young men from Sumatra Tawalib – an Islamic boarding school in West Sumatra – leaving their countries to continue their religious schools. They are (late) Abubakar Ayyub, (late) Nur al-Din Ahmad, and (late) Zaini Dahlan. They are still very young so when they go, the most recent twenty-two-year-old while the youngest was only sixteen years old.

At first they planned to go to Egypt, because Egypt has long been famous as a center of Islamic study. But their teachers in Sumatra Tawalib advised them to go to India, because India started becoming centers of Islamic thought modernization. They left separately, (late) Abubakar Ayyub go along with (late) Ahmad Din, while the (late) Zaini Dahlan follow later. Three young men were reunited in Lucknow, India. None of the three when it was thought – according to the divine destiny – that their departure would be a monumentally important event in the development of Islam in Indonesia, especially for Ahmadiyah in Indonesia. Indonesia was the third young man immediately reached Lahore and were very impressed at the Ahmadiyya are a lot of changing various aspects of faith and their understanding of Islam, even though at that time they found it from Isyaati Anjuman Islam or known as the Lahore Ahmadiyya. Soon the three young men was found that the source of the Ahmadiyya Qadian is from, and even opposed and prohibited by Isyaati Anjuman Islam (Ahmadiyya Lahore), the three young men went to Qadian, Ahmadiyah center founded by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as, The Promised Messiah . It is not strange when the three young men immediately allegiance at the hands of Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra, Hazrat Haji Mirza Mahmud Ahmad ra Basyiruddin. Events allegiance three young men will change the face of the Indonesian Islamic community in the future.

Indonesia was the three young men continue their studies at the Madrasah Ahmadiyah.Tidak long before they felt the need to share the blessings of God’s grace they have received it with their colleagues in Sumatra Tawalib. They invited their counterparts in Sumatra Tawalib students to learn in Qadian. Not long after twenty-three young people from Sumatra Indonesia Tawalib join the previous three Indonesian youth, to continue the study also baiat into Ahmadiyah.
Two years after the first Indonesian first initiation into the Ahmadiyya, Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra went to England to attend the Seminar of Religions at Wembley, then a visit in Europe. After Caliph Hadhrat returned from a visit to the western, Indonesian students are anxious that their country, Indonesia, get the gift of the Promised Messiah through his successor. The students then invited Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra in a tea party, in which the (late) Haji Mahmud – spokesman for Indonesian students – delivered the speech in Arabic, expressed the hope that as Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra had visited the west, they expect Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra deigned to visit to the east, ie to Indonesia. Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra replied in Arabic that they should not worry and grieve, because it is a sign of people do not believe. And Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra convince them that because the Promised Messiah is Zulqarnain (which has two horns), one heading west and the other to the east, then the message will reach the Promised Messiah East. And Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra also assured them that even though he himself was not able to visit Indonesia, he will send his representative to Indonesia. Then, (late) Maulana Rahmat Ali RA sent as preachers to Indonesia as its fulfillment. In the rain-soaked day, mid-summer 1925, Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra, Hazrat Haji Mirza Mahmud Ahmad ra Basyiruddin lead release (late) Maulana Rahmat Ali ra to leave for Indonesia. The foundation of the development of Ahmadiyah in Indonesia has been laid.

Development of Ahmadiyah in Indonesia is very attractive. Unlike Ahmadiyya developments in other countries, the development of Ahmadiyah in Indonesia has a very special thing. Indonesian man was the one who asked the Caliph Hadhrat to send preachers to Indonesia, to spread Ahmadiyah in Indonesia. While in other countries, Caliph Hadhrat was the one who decided to send a preacher to the country, without them asking. It is a particular aspect that should be contemplated and considered by all Ahmadis in Indonesia, to realize that they must work hard to Ahmadiyah, they have to sacrifice themselves for Islam and Ahmadiyah, because the Indonesian people who had been invited Ahmadiyya.

Fate kept rolling when Maulana Rahmat Ali ra first arrived in Tapaktuan, Aceh. There were a few people in Indonesia who entered Ahmadiyya allegiance. Not long after Maulana Rahmat Ali ra went to Padang, the capital of West Sumatra. In Padang, a turning point occurs, many intellectuals, Islamic scholars and figures into the Ahmadiyah, as well as ordinary people. And in Padang was the one in 1926 Ahmadis were officially established as a congregation or organization.

In 1931 Maulana Rahmat Ali ra leaving for Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. And the rapid development of the Ahmadiyah, many intellectuals, the educated, well-known figures and aristocratic society into the Ahmadiyah. And in Jakarta was the one established by the Executive Board of the Ahmadiyya (late) R. Muhyiddin as its first Chairman. Rapid development of Ahmadiyah – the gift of God – are astonishing. Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II ra also send some preacher, and Indonesian students studying in Qadian started home again. But progress was not without struggle. The Indonesian scholars, both traditional and modernist continued to attack and oppose. Many formal debate between Ahmadiyah and other Islamic scholars, and the largest was held in Jakarta in 1933.

Because Indonesia is an important point in the world, when World War II broke out, Indonesia became the main target for the allies and the axis. Japan, the country shaft, soon mastered Indonesia after the Pacific War – World War II battlefield in Asia – broke. Dutch colonialism ended, and began the new authorities in Indonesia, a new period began. Unfortunately, new rulers are no better than the old ruling, even harder. Spread of Ahmadiyah to be slow, even some preachers and church leaders, such as (the late) M. Sayyid Muhammad Shah, (the late) M. Malik Aziz Ahmad Khan, (the late) M. Abdul Wahid, (late) Sadkar, etc.., Thrown into prison. Only the sheer grace of God that they were released after serving some time in prison, although the Japanese military’s secret police, Kenpeitai, has decided to execute some of them.
Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945 opening wide a better future for Indonesia. The event also opened the door sacrifices for the country, as Islam teaches its followers mengkhidmati country. Many of Indonesia’s Ahmadi submissive and self-sacrificing for their country. Even the first National Chairman of the Indonesian Ahmadiyah, R. Muhyiddin sacrificed his life for the country. He was killed by Dutch troops in 1946 because he is one of the key figures of Indonesia’s independence. Also there is some Ahmadis who served as a soldier in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia, and sacrifice themselves for the nation. Ahmadis while others play in their respective fields for the independence of Indonesia, such as (the late) M. Abdul Wahid and (the late) M. Ahmad Nuruddin fought as a radio broadcaster, delivering a message of Indonesia’s independence to the world. Meanwhile, another preacher (late) M. Sayyid Muhammad Shah is one of the key figures that Soekarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, later bestowed the title of veteran to him for his dedication to the country. Also many Ahmadis are instrumental in maintaining the independence of Indonesia.

Nevertheless, the revolution period also provides an opportunity for the enemy to attack Ahmadiyah cruelly, both physically and mentally. Many sincere Ahmadi who sacrificed their lives for the sake of religion, martyred by orthodox Muslim men who force them out of Ahmadiyya. In Tasikmalaya, some people Ahmadi martyred because they refused to come out of the Ahmadiyah, they remained steadfast in their faith to the point of final blood. Lillahi wa inna inna ilaihi raaji’un.

Period of the 1950s was a period of rapid development, but also the period of martyrdom. The rebels are radical, DI / TII, slaughtering some Ahmadis in West Java. Their mistake was that they remained steadfast in their faith, refusing to come out of the Ahmadiyah. But also in 1953, the government passed the Ahmadiyah as a legal entity in the Republic of Indonesia. This opens the door tabligh greater. Influence appears in 1950-1970 when many state leaders are very familiar with and close to the Ahmadiyya people Ahmadi.

Ahmadiyah was never involved in politics, although political tensions in Indonesia in 1960 is very high. Political struggle ultimately brought the downfall of Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, also claimed many victims. A symbol of a new era in Indonesia at that time was the death of a medical student, University of Indonesia, Arif Rahman Hakim, who is nothing but a khadim Ahmadiyah. He was killed in the middle of the political tensions of the time and became a symbol for a new era at the time.

As the efforts of Islamic countries to destroy Ahmadiyah through Rabithah Alam al Islami rampant in the early 1970s, the Indonesian scholars follow their lead. So when Rabithah Alam al Islami declared Ahmadis as non-Muslims in 1974, as the National Assembly of Pakistan do the same, Indonesian scholars struggled to plunge into the same abyss. Since then, the Indonesian Ahmadiyah face many barriers and obstacles in its development, both in the field and in the field tarbiyat sermons. But it is a fulfillment of prophecy of Prophet Muhammad PBUH that the followers of Imam Mahdi – the true followers of the Prophet at the end of the world – will face the same situation with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, as mentioned in the Qur’an Surah Al-Jumu’ah: 3-4.

Since then a lot of obstacles and barriers which grew louder, though it does not diminish the spirit and courage and sacrifice in the chest pengkhidmatan Indonesian Ahmadis. Period of the 1980s was a period of struggle as well as the emphasis of the government and the clergy. The government does not allow Ahmadiyah Indonesia to hold Jalsa Salana and KPA to Khuddam-RA and Lajnah Imaillah. Many Ahmadiyya mosques were demolished by a mob led by the cleric. Majelis Ulama Indonesia m erekomendasikan to the government to declare Ahmadis as non-Muslims. Many Ahmadis who suffered physical attacks. Despite this, the companions of the Messenger of Allah as they remain patient and steadfast.

Period of the 1990s to the rapid development period of Ahmadiyah Indonesia. The development becomes faster after atba Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV, Hadhrat Ahmad Tahir, proclaimed allegiance International program and establish Moslem Television Ahmadiyya (MTA). Nevertheless, the rapid development of Ahmadiyah Indonesia Ahmadiyah is not as fast as internationally throughout the world. However, the development of Ahmadiyah Indonesia remains outstanding compared to the development in the past. And by the grace of God, the advancement of Ahmadiyah Indonesia became increasingly rapidly every year. And, God willing, will be even faster in the coming years.

Financial crisis, followed by the economic crisis and political tensions coloring Indonesia at the end of this century. Resignation of President Suharto was replaced by President Baharuddin Jusuf Habibie, and then the general election in 1999 of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrahman Wahid as president makes four of Indonesia, even so, it does not stop the political and economic upheaval.

Nonetheless, this situation provides an opportunity for Indonesia to mengkhidmati Ahmadiyah community. East Timorese refugees who flooded parts of Indonesia after poll states that want East Timor separated from Indonesia, providing an opportunity to the Assembly Khuddamul Ahmadiyah Indonesia Khidmat Khalq to send a team to openly submissive. Also by the grace of God, after thirty years, the Minister of State of Women’s Empowerment attend astral conjunction Lajnah Imaillah Indonesia in 2000. These advances open the door to an important plan of Ahmadiyah Indonesia. It provides a valuable opportunity for the Indonesian Ahmadiyah Congregation for the dreams, hopes and desires that have long, ie Khalifatul Masih visit to Indonesia. Only the sheer grace of God, atba Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV coming to Indonesia.

Indonesia has a special place in the Ahmadiyah, Indonesia has a special value in the worldwide spread of Ahmadiyah. People Ahmadiyah Indonesia was invited, seventy-five years ago. Indonesian people was the one who invited and requested the most precious gift from God Almighty., Which is His Messenger. A value that is very, very rare. And now, the invitations had been sent seventy-five years ago has been met, invitations to the Caliph Waqt, his representative in the world, to come to Indonesia.

This is not the end, even this is a start. Beginning for all Indonesian Ahmadis to improve and fight even harder for God and His Church. Do not be like the people of Prophet Moses just before they entered the Promised Land, which led to the wrath of God. Follow the Prophet. at the time of the Battle of Badr, when he saw. continue to pray and ask God to help Islam, although Allah has promised victory in the Battle of Badr.
